Frank De Boer has been appointed Netherlands head coach on a two-year deal which will run until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
De Boer, 50, succeeds Ronald Koeman who stepped down last month to take charge of Barcelona.
The former midfielder won 112 caps for Holland between 1990 and 2004, with only Wesley Sneijder and Edwin Van Der Sar making more appearances for the national team.
De Boer began his coaching career at Ajax and won four successive league titles during his stay in Amsterdam between 2010 and 2016.
He has also managed Inter Milan, Crystal Palace and Atlanta United in the MLS, and assisted head coach Bert Van Marwijk when Holland reached the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa.
A statement on OnsOranje, the official media channel of the Dutch Football Association, read: “De Boer will start his work for the KNVB with immediate effect and will therefore be on the bench in the upcoming exhibition match against Mexico and the Nations League duels with Bosnia-Herzegovina and Italy.”
