Chelsea's odds-on favourite Maurizio Sarri leaves post as Napoli boss

Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has thanked head coach Maurizio Sarri for his achievements at the club, with the former Serie A Coach of the Year the odds-on favourite for Chelsea.

Sarri led Napoli to a second-placed finish this season, with a 91-point haul not enough to beat Juventus to the Scudetto. It was a third campaign of improvement from the southerners under his care.

On Wednesday De Laurentiis tweeted: "I thank Maurizio Sarri for his dedication to Napoli which has brought great prestige and emotion to the city by creating a style of football which is admired everywhere and by everyone. Well done Maurizio."

Sarri has been linked with a move to Chelsea, as the future of Antonio Conte continues to be undecided.

The 59-year-old has been backed into 4/9 with Sky Bet to takeover at Stamford Bridge, with odds tumbling following the news of his departure.

Reports in Italy claim Russian outfit Zenit St Petersburg are also keen to recruit Sarri amid the speculation he has been lined up as a potential successor to Conte.

It has since been announced that Carlo Ancelotti has signed a three-year contract to replace Sarri in Naples.

The 58-year-old former Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris St Germain boss succeeds Sarri at Stadio San Paolo, less than a week after the latter secured a second-placed finish behind Juventus in Serie A.

A statement published on Napoli's official website on Wednesday evening said Ancelotti, who had been out of work since leaving Bayern Munich last September, would take charge for the next three campaigns.
