Norwich confirm promotion

Norwich will play Premier League football next season after securing automatic promotion with a 2-1 victory over Blackburn.

While their success this season has been built on a collection of late winners, this time it was a case of taking care of business nice and early as the Canaries moved nine points clear of third-placed Leeds.

Goals from Marco Stipermann and Mario Vrancic inside the first 22 minutes proved enough despite Lewis Travis halving the deficit almost immediately, and Norwich will win the title if avoiding defeat at Aston Villa in their final league game.

Should they lose and Sheffield United win at Stoke, it would be the Blades who go up as champions, but for now Daniel Farke's side can celebrate a job well done.

Sheffield United all but promoted

Sheffield United are on the verge of automatic promotion to the Premier League after they beat Ipswich 2-0 at Bramall Lane.

The gulf in class between the two sides was evident early on, but it took almost half an hour for Scott Hogan to tap home the game's first goal from Jack O'Connell's cross (24).

Chris Wilder's side passed up several chances after the break, but sealed the victory midway through the second half as O'Connell powered a header past Dean Gerken (71).

The victory means the Blades are all-but promoted, though their return to the top flight is not mathematically secure, with closest rivals Leeds, who have an inferior goal difference, in action on Sunday afternoon.

Playing the attractive brand of passing football that has been their hallmark all season, the Canaries created chance after chance but only took two of them and let Rovers back in it almost immediately after making it 2-0.

It was one-way traffic from the word go and Onel Hernandez fired a low shot just wide on eight minutes before dithering too long after being put in by Emi Buendia five minutes later.

But a packed home crowd only had seconds to wait for the opener. The ball was not properly cleared and broke nicely on the edge of the box for Marco Stiepermann, who drilled a low shot past Jayson Leutwiler for his second opening goal in successive home games.

Top scorer Teemu Pukki and Buendia both went close to stretching the lead before a controversial moment when Darragh Lenihan was only shown a yellow card by referee Andrew Madley after bringing down Pukki as the Finnish frontman bore down on goal.

Leutwiler, on only his fourth league appearance of the season as David Raya's deputy, then made superb point-blank saves to deny first Hernandez and then Pukki but again Blackburn could not clear their lines and Mario Vrancic was able to take aim before arrowing a magnificent 25-yard shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.

Norwich looked in complete command at that point but Rovers quickly dampened the party mood by pulling one back from their first effort on goal. Amari'i Bell worked himself some space on the left and did well to pick out the unmarked Travis on the edge of the box. The midfielder coolly curled the ball beyond Tim Krul's grasp to get his side back in it.

Normal service was soon resumed however, with Leutwiler thwarting Pukki after he looked sure to score from a Stiepermann cutback and Hernandez sending a low shot inches wide of the far post.

The Blackburn keeper made a world-class save to keep out Buendia's audacious deflected overhead kick from just outside the six-yard box after a scramble following a corner, while Hernandez was desperately unlucky when his right-foot piledriver hit the angle of post and bar with the overworked Leutwiler a mere spectator on this occasion.

All Blackburn had to offer was a Bradley Dack free-kick from a dangerous position that sailed way over and Norwich twice went close to stretching their advantage in the 74th minute, as first Hernandez was crowded out after bursting clean through and then Stiepermann was denied by the latest top-drawer save from Leutwiler when his shot looked destined for the bottom corner.

Rotherham relegated

A year after winning promotion out of Sky Bet League One, Rotherham United will return to the third tier following their 2-1 defeat at West Brom, combined with Millwall's draw with Stoke City.

The Millers looked set to keep their survival hopes alive when Clark Robertson gave them a 50th-minute lead.

But Jay Rodriguez drew Albion level from the penalty spot in the 77th minute before Rekeem Harper's first goal for the club two minutes later - on the day he was named as their Young Player Of The season - sealed Rotherham's fate.

The defeat left Rotherham, who hit the bar in the final minute through Joe Newell, four points adrift of Millwall with one match remaining.

Rotherham went down fighting having impressed against their high-flying opponents.

They made a bright start and midfielder Semi Ajayi came close to giving them the lead after 10 minutes, heading a cross from Anthony Forde over the bar.

The lively Ajayi then had a shot blocked two minutes later before Rotherham were denied by the woodwork.

Newell swung over a corner in the 17th minute and Robertson rose above the Albion defence to meet the ball with a towering header that crashed against the post.

Robertson then connected with another Newell corner just after the half hour but this time his header flashed across the face of goal before dropping well wide.

After their low-key display in the first half, Albion started the second period on the front foot and Stefan Johansen fired a shot just wide from Mason Holgate's 46th-minute cross.

But Rotherham's greater endeavour was rewarded when Newell floated a free-kick to the corner of the Albion area.

Robertson met the cross with a looping header that dropped over the line off the underside of the bar despite the best efforts of Brunt to hack the ball clear.

Ironically Albion enjoyed their best spell of the game after falling behind and drew themselves level when Gayle was fouled by Michael Smith and Rodriguez converted from the spot.

Their comeback was complete when Harper picked up a loose ball on the edge of the area and beat Rodak with a powerful low drive.

Millwall earn vital point

Millwall picked up the vital point they needed to secure Championship survival from a 0-0 home draw against Stoke.

The Lions have now lost just once in six matches - but they had to battle to secure a welcome point.

Millwall's Dave Martin made a fine early save to keep the game goalless when defender Moritz Bauer broke quickly and played in striker Benik Afobe, who fired straight at the goalkeeper.

Martin was kept awake when James McClean fired an effort straight at him after getting away from his marker and minutes later McClean went even closer when he blasted against the bar, before Joe Allen agonisingly saw his follow-up cleared off the line as Stoke dominated.

Millwall's best chance of the half came late on when Ryan Leonard headed Lee Gregory's cross wide.

The Lions started the second half brightly and Gregory had a powerful fight-foot shot charged down as the hosts looked for an early opener.

Moments later midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe saw a shot blocked before Jed Wallace was thwarted by a smart save from Jack Butland after some excellent work from Tunnicliffe.

But despite their best efforts, the Lions could not find the breakthrough they craved

For Stoke, this result marked a league-high 21st draw of the campaign.

Derby strengthen play-off grip

A goal in each half from Tom Lawrence and Jayden Bogle put Derby on the brink of a place in the play-offs with a 2-0 victory over Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

The visitors took an 18th minute lead when good work from Mason Mount on the right ended with a pass to Lawrence, whose low shot from inside the box took a wicked deflection on its way past Niki Maenpaa.

And the result was put beyond doubt on 77 minutes when a quick break out of defence saw substitute Mason Bennett feed Jayden Bogle, who fired into the roof of the net with only Maenpaa to beat.

City were reduced to ten men on 59 minutes when substitute Antoine Semenyo was sent off. The young striker was shown a straight red card by referee Darren Bond for a lunging challenge on Tom Huddlestone.

Derby now almost certainly need just one win from their last two games to finish in the top six.

Boro make it four wins from five

Lewis Wing returned to Middlesbrough's starting line-up to help them earn a much-needed 2-1 victory over Reading at the Riverside Stadium.

Wing's predatory strike just after the half-hour mark cancelled out the Royals' beautiful opener scored by teenager Danny Loader in the 11th minute.

And Middlesbrough took command by hitting what proved to be the winner six minutes before half-time when Britt Assombalonga converted a penalty to grab his 15th goal of the season.

It was a victory over Reading, who were effectively safe before kick-off, that kept the home side level on points with Derby in sixth going into a final-day trip to Rotherham next Sunday.

In a bid to bounce back from Easter Monday's defeat at Nottingham Forest, Middlesbrough boss Tony Pulis sprung a surprise by recalling midfielder Wing to the starting line-up after hernia surgery.

It was a move that had the desired effect too, even if Boro and the club's fans were dealt an early blow when teenager Loader scored a first senior goal to remember.

After collecting Chris Gunter's throw, the 18-year-old turned John Obi Mikel before finding space and curling brilliantly into the top-left corner of Darren Randolph's net.

Wing had already hit the post with an earlier effort and seen goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez tip over the crossbar before his persistence did find the net.

The former non-league midfielder was on hand in the 31st minute when Howson's deep right-wing cross bounced off defender Andy Yiadom.

Worse was to come for the Reading full-back because - eight minutes later - he was guilty of tripping George Saville in the area after he had brought down another Howson cross.

Assombalonga, who had the ball in the net but had it ruled out for that trip, then displayed his calmness to stay confident enough to send Martinez the wrong way from the penalty spot to give Middlesbrough the half-time lead.

Wednesday fight back at Preston

Sheffield Wednesday battled back from two goals down in a 3-3 thriller against Preston at Deepdale, a result which ended the Owls' feint hopes of sneaking into the play-offs.

Steve Bruce's side looked dead and buried at 3-1 behind late on, but two quick goals at least rescued a share of the spoils.

Preston opened brightest in their final home game of a largely encouraging campaign overall and struck the opener after nine minutes.

Robinson's cross from the left flank was flicked on by Alan Browne, perfectly into the path of Jayden Stockley, who headed home his first goal at Deepdale from five yards.

Wednesday fluffed a terrific chance soon after as Steven Fletcher smashed an effort straight at Ripley after latching on to a measured through-ball from Bannan.

The Owls were punished when North End struck a second minutes later.

Wednesday skipper Tom Lees could only head disastrously into his own net after Joe Rafferty's cross had taken a deflection.

The Owls halved the deficit four minutes after the restart. It was Bannan who struck, lashing high into the net from 15 yards following a neat back-heel from Marco Matias.

North End went 3-1 up in the 61st minute as Sean Maguire played in Browne, and the midfielder darted through the middle before tucking past Dawson from 18 yards.

The late drama began when the Owls struck twice in three minutes either side of the 75-minute mark.

Fernando Forestieri headed in Matias's cross firstly, then the visitors incredibly made it 3-3 when sub Atdhe Nuhiu dived in to head home Bannan's cross from the opposite flank.

The visitors were then reduced to 10 when Dominic Iorfa clattered into Darnell Fisher, but they then almost nicked a victory when sub Lucas Joao was denied by Davies' goal-line clearance.

Swansea faint play-off hopes over

Swansea's theoretical Sky Bet Championship play-off hopes were ended as Hull came from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium.

Scotland striker Oli McBurnie scored in either half to move to 23 goals for the season and put the home side two up.

Hull, with an unfamiliar line-up as they prepare for next season, were subdued in attack but managed to grab a point thanks to second-half strikes from top scorer Jarrod Bowen and substitute Nouha Dicko.

It meant Swansea were unable to make it a seventh straight win on home soil.

Birmingham held by Wigan

Birmingham shared the spoils with Wigan in a 1-1 draw in their final home game of the season at St Andrew's.

Birmingham, who had been looking to do the double over Wigan, failed to capitalise upon a bright start after Lukas Jutkiewicz had opened their account in the first attack of the game.

A rejuvenated Wigan, who scored an impressive 2-1 away win over promotion-seeking Leeds in their previous game, produced another fine performance with Nick Powell equalising in the last minute of the first half.

Everything had appeared rosy for Birmingham when Jutkiewicz quickly celebrated being appointed Birmingham's captain for the last home game of the season in the absence of Michael Morrison by scoring the opening goal in only 90 seconds.

A seemingly harmless long ball by Gary Gardner into Wigan's penalty area resulted in a terrible mix-up between visiting captain Jonas Olsson and his goalkeeper Jamie Cook.

Olsson gestured for Jones to collect the ball but the keeper hesitated and Jutkiewicz managed to make contact with an outstretched leg to steer his shot through the legs of the embarrassed goalkeeper and into the net to record his 14th league goal of the season.

Wigan levelled in the last minute of the first half following a stumble by Birmingham's Jota which allowed Robinson to gain possession and advance down the left before producing a squared pass into the path of Powell to equalise with a long-range deflected shot.
