Fantasy Football verdict on Alvaro Morata

Amee Ruszkai looks at whether Alvaro Morata represents a bargain or a gamble for Sky Sports Fantasy Football bosses.

Alvaro Morata's move to Chelsea followed the trend being set by the Premier League's elite this summer - big money moves for big name strikers.

The former Juventus and Real Madrid striker arrives looking to fill the boots of Diego Costa, who is set to move on after being deemed surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

Morata is a cheaper option at £12million for your Sky Sports Fantasy Football team than both Costa (£12.2million) and Romelu Lukaku (£12.4m), but does he present better value for money?

Both Costa and Lukaku outscored Morata last season, with 20 and 25 goals respectively in comparison to the Spaniard's 15. Yet that was while playing more than double the number of minutes.

In a limited role at Real Madrid, Morata averaged a goal every 89 minutes in LaLiga - only bettered by Lionel Messi - and, when taking assists into account, was involved in a goal every 70.

In comparison, Lukaku only scored every 130 minutes and was involved in a goal every 105, while Costa scored every 154 minutes and was involved in a goal every 114.

However, the big question around Morata is how he will handle stepping into a more prominent role at Stamford Bridge.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, the likes of Lukaku and Arsenal new boy Alexandre Lacazette (£11.8million) have experience of carrying the goal-scoring burden, having scored 40 per cent and 36 per cent respectively of their club's league goals last season.

Morata's record in big games doesn't make for great reading either.

Last season, he scored only twice against LaLiga's top six - against fifth placed Villarreal and sixth placed Real Sociedad.

Yet, having not even featured in the games against Barcelona and Atletico Madrid - playing just 187 minutes of football against the top six - Morata is, in many ways, still an unknown quantity.

The question is whether he will rise to the challenge of being Chelsea's main man, similar to Costa, or whether he will crumble under the pressure.

For £12million, he presents a gamble for Fantasy Football managers that Lukaku perhaps doesn't, for just £0.4million more.

But in a team arguably more creative than United, and with a supporting cast containing Eden Hazard and the assist machine Cesc Fabregas, Morata has the potential to become the star his previous cameo roles suggest.
