AFTERNOON SESSION

  • TV Coverage: Sky Sports (1pm BST)
  • First Round: Best of 19 legs

Darren Webster (8/15) v Steve Lennon (6/4)

Head-to-head: 0-0
2018 meetings: 0-0

Steve Lennon is being underestimated here in a match between two players who have never met competitively.

The young Irishman is a superb prospect and while he’s not ready to go deep in one of these big majors, he’s definitely capable of springing a minor upset against the Demolition Man.

Prediction: 6-10

Ian White (1/2) v Max Hopp (13/8)

Head-to-head: 1-5
2018 meetings: 1-2

I’m going with Max Hopp to spring a mini surprise here. He really looks as though he’s starting to deliver on his rich potential this season as we saw when he beat Michael Smith to win the German Darts Open.

Ian White has obviously got a good track record of reaching major quarter finals but he’s got a poor record against Hopp, losing five of their six matches.

Prediction: 7-10

Gerwyn Price (1/1) v Joe Cullen (4/5)

Head-to-head: 3-1
2018 meetings: 1-1

This is the match I’m looking forward to most believe it or not and it’s so hard to call.

I’ve always been a big fan of Cullen and I’m impatiently waiting for him to finally show the world what he can do on these biggest stages but I’m wary he might be a bit intimidated if a pumped up Gerwyn Price gets going.

Rather than pick a winner I’m going for there to be over 16.5 legs, a checkout of over 127.5 and over 9.5 180s at 3/1. It’ll be a belter.

Prediction: 9-10

Daryl Gurney (2/5) v Steve West (2/1)

Head-to-head: 2-2
2018 meetings: 0-1

The World Grand Prix champion has a tricky opener here against plucky journeyman Steve West, who has a habit of causing a shocks.

He’s also enjoying the best period of his career at the ripe old age of 43 so Gurney will need to produce a decent level of form to get through.

I think he will and it makes sense to throw in the 180s to boost those odds to 11/10. He hit the most maximums during the Premier League regular season so it seems a bit of a no brainer to me.

Prediction: 10-5

EVENING SESSION

  • TV Coverage: Sky Sports (7pm BST)
  • First Round: Best of 19 legs

Mensur Suljovic (2/9) v Steve Beaton (10/3)

Head-to-head: 0-8
2018 meetings: 0-0

John Part stumped me on the Sporting Life Darts Podcast this week by backing Steve Beaton at 400/1 each-way to win the tournament.

He's 10/3 just to win this match but he has beaten Suljovic in all eight of their previous meetings.

I’m not sure I have the same courage as John to go with the experienced Adonis but he’s done enough to warn me off Mensur!

Prediction: 10-7

Gary Anderson (1/5) v Stephen Bunting (7/2)

Head-to-head: 6-4
2018 meetings: 0-0

As brilliant as Gary Anderson is and as much as we all love him, I never like backing him in early rounds of majors – he’s been too prone to the odd upset when matches aren’t of a long enough format to take the lottery factor away.

He’s not made it past the third round of in 11 of the last 28 TV majors – but obviously when he does he’s hard to stop.

Stephen Bunting is showing signs of his best form again after a lean spell and he could make this tough for Anderson.

I’m going with over 16.5 legs in the match at 11/10.

Prediction: 10-8

Rob Cross (1/5) v Mervyn King (7/2)

Head-to-head: 2-3
2018 meetings: 0-1

Rob Cross is my main tip to win his second major title so obviously he’ll do the business here.

It’s a shame because Mervyn King has the best walk on in darts purely for his music but I can’t let that cloud my judgement.

I’m backing an in-form world champion to win, hit over 4.5 180s and a checkout of over 100.5 at 11/10.

Prediction: 10-5

Raymond van Barneveld (4/9) v Kyle Anderson (7/4)

Head-to-head: 6-5
2018 meetings: 0-0

I never like getting involved in Barney’s matches because it always depends which Barney turns up. And it’s like a toss of a coin trying to predict.

He does have a burning desire to win another TV major but Kyle Anderson is a dangerous customer, even though he’s lost four of their last five games – which were all last year.

I reckon 7/4 for the bad Barney to turn up is probably worth taking.

Prediction: 7-10
