AFTERNOON SESSION

TV Coverage: Sky Sports Darts (1230 GMT)

First Round: (Best of 5 sets), Preliminary: (Best of 3 sets)

  • Kenny Neyens (2/1) v Jamie Lewis (P) (4/11)
Young Welshman Jamie Lewis, who clinched one of the three remaining spots from the last-chance saloon qualifying event, promised so much having reached the World Grand Prix quarter-finals in 2015 but he's still only 26. This season his highlight was a nine-dart finish in a Players Championship tournament while last year he broke his duck on the Alexandra Palace stage at the fifth time of asking so at least he doesn't have that mental barrier to deal with against another young talent in World Youth Championship quarter-finalist Kenny Neyens of Belgium.
    Prediction: 1-2
  • Alan Norris (2/7) v Kim Viljanen (13/5)
'Chuck' will have been happy with this draw as he bids to maintain his proud record of never losing a first round of a World Championship in nine years (seven in the BDO). The former BDO world champion, who reached the quarter-finals here two years ago, has struggled to recapture his best form since his semi-final run at the UK Open but should still have too much for Kim Viljanen. His Finnish opponent has lost at the first hurdle in his three previous visits here although last year he lost 3-0 to Michael van Gerwen which can hardly be put down as a failure.
    Prediction: 3-0
  • Kyle Anderson (2/9) v Peter Jacques (10/3)
There won't be a shortage of darts punters expecting Kyle Anderson to reach the quarters this year, where he'd likely to face MVG, and the way he pushed the Dutchman to the absolute limit in an unforgettable European Championship semi-final means that would be quite some treat. The Aussie hit a nine-darter but missed two match darts to claim the best win of his career, even though he has also won a high-class Auckland Darts Masters this season. Peter Jacques is making his debut here after a solid season on the Pro Tour but shouldn't trouble Anderson.
    Prediction: 3-0
  • Jonny Clayton (1/2) v Kenny Neyens/Jamie Lewis (13/8)
Jonny Clayton is my remaining "to reach the quarter-final" outsider bet from my pre-tournament preview following Joe Cullen's agonising defeat last night so I'm hoping he comes up against Neyens! I obviously still think he's good enough to beat Lewis too, and you read by reasoning using the above link.
    Prediction: 3-1

EVENING SESSION

TV Coverage: Sky Sports Darts (1900 GMT)

First Round: (Best of 5 sets), Preliminary: (Best of 3 sets)

  • Willard Bruguier (7/4) v Cody Harris (P) (4/9)
Cody Harris has ambitions of becoming New Zealand's full-time professional darts player on the PDC circuit and Gary Anderson last year described him as a "little superstar just sitting" at the Auckland Darts Masters. He took four legs off Simon Whitlock in a 6-4 defeat in Auckland this year and three off Phil Taylor in Melbourne while tonight he faces a man you may remember from the US Darts Masters. The South Dakota-based police officer gave Gerwyn Price a scare a day after winning the national championships to qualify for here. It'll be a nervy, scrappy clash and it's very hard to call!
    Prediction: 2-1
  • James Wade (2/9) v Keegan Brown (10/3)
James Wade has to do something special at the World Championship if he's going to keep his spot in the Premier League next season. The seven-time major winner will be the first to admit its been a largely rotten year but he'll be happy to be back in the set play format of the worlds, where he tends to avoid upsets. He's reached the quarter-finals or better in eight of his last 10 visits here and his two-second round defeats came to Mensur Suljovic (albeit when it was a shock in 2011) and Stephen Bunting. He has lost his two meetings with Keegan Brown this season - both in final leg deciders of Players Championship events - but the former world youth champion hasn't had much to shout about either this year.
    Prediction: 3-1
  • Dave Chisnall (1/3) v Vincent van der Voort (23/11)
Dave Chisnall is another big name who hasn't enjoyed much success this season - although he did win one Players Championship event in August and reach the final of the Shanghai Darts Masters, where he was battered 8-0 by MVG. it's probably worth taking him on against Vincent van der Voort, who is obviously a dangerous opponent with plenty of experience on this stage. He'll know a scalp is more than possible here but either way, it could well go the distance.
    Prediction: 2-3
  • Ian White (1/4) v Willard Bruguier/Cody Harris (3/1)
Ian White should be too good for either preliminary winner but obviously wait until you see how their cope with the big stage nerves before delving into any sub markets for this first-round clash.
    Prediction: 3-0
