Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc help Australia to victory in first Test in Brisbane

Day four

Pacemen Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc helped Australia complete a crushing win over Pakistan on day four of the first Test in Brisbane on Sunday.

The two quicks shared seven second-innings wickets as Pakistan succumbed to defeat by an innings and five runs in the opening match of the two-Test series.

Pakistan resumed staring at a heavy loss, at 64 for three, after Australia made 580 in reply to the tourists' first innings of 240.

A quick finish looked likely after the early wickets of opener Shan Masood (42) and Iftikhar Ahmed (0) left Pakistan at 94 for five, before the Australians were frustrated by two lengthy middle-order partnerships.

Babar Azam and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan put on a 132-run stand for the sixth wicket, which threatened to send the match to a fifth day.

Spinner Nathan Lyon finally had Babar caught behind for a 173-ball 104, but there was more struggle in store for the bowlers as Rizwan and Yasir Shah (42) added 79 runs together.

Finally, however, Hazelwood had Rizwan caught five runs short of a century, triggering a terminal collapse in which Pakistan lost its last four wickets for 30 runs in the space of five overs, slumping from 305 for six to be all out 335.

Hazlewood finished with four for 63 from 21 overs to give him six wickets for the match, while Starc took three for 73 from 16.2 to go with his four wickets from the first innings.

Man-of-the-match was Australia's Marnus Labuschagne for his superb knock of 185.

The second Test starts in Adelaide on November 29.

Day three

Marnus Labuschagne recorded the highest first-class score of his career as Australia took control on the third day of the first Test against Pakistan in Brisbane.

Labuschagne registered his maiden Test century en route to 185, which was ably aided by opener David Warner's 154 and a half-century from Matthew Wade as Australia racked up a first-innings lead of 340 runs after being bowled out for 580 at the Gabba.

Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins strengthened the hosts' grip on the match as Pakistan reached stumps on 64 for three.

Australia started the day on 312 for one but Warner could only add three runs to his overnight score of 151 as he fell to 16-year-old Naseem Shah.

Leg-spinner Yasir Shah (four for 205) became the first bowler to concede 200 runs three times in Test cricket, but managed to earn the scalp of Steve Smith for just four - the lowest individual score of the innings.

However, Labuschagne and Wade pushed on. The former Glamorgan batsman notched his first Test century before Wade succumbed to Haris Sohail for 60.

Australia lost their final five wickets for just 35 runs but it did not matter as Starc dismissed captain Azhar Ali and Sohail, with Asad Shafiq gone for a six-ball duck to Cummins.

Opener Shan Masood (27 not out) and Babar Azam (unbeaten on 20) rebuilt for the tourists from their early losses but have an uphill battle to remain in the opening Test of the two-match series.

Day two

David Warner hit an unbeaten 151 as Australia seized control of the first Test against Pakistan on day two.

The opener's 22nd Test century helped the hosts reach 312 for one at stumps at the Gabba on Friday, putting them 72 runs in front.

Warner was ably assisted by Joe Burns, who lost his wicket to Yasir Shah three runs short of a century, and Marnus Labuschagne.

Pakistan thought they had got Warner out shortly after he brought up his half-century but replays showed 16-year-old Naseem Shah's delivery was a no-ball.

Warner was almost run out on 93 but just survived and went on to make an unbeaten 151 from 265 balls.

Burns, meanwhile, clubbed 10 fours on his way to an impressive 97 and Labuschagne finished the second day unbeaten on 55.

Day one

Australia pacemen Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins helped the hosts recover to dismiss Pakistan for 240 on the opening day of the first Test in Brisbane.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Pakistan - who have never won at the Gabba - coasted past lunch at 75 without loss before Cummins sparked a flurry of four wickets for only three runs.

Opener Shan Masood (27) edged Cummins to Steve Smith in the slips, with Josh Hazlewood then seeing Pakistan captain Azhar Ali (39) fall to a fine diving catch from Joe Burns.

Haris Sohail managed just one before he was caught behind off Starc, to leave the tourists reeling on 77 for three. Babar Azam faced only four balls, as he edged a full and wide delivery from Hazlewood to Burns.

Spinner Nathan Lyon removed Iftikhar Ahmed (seven), while after tea Mohammad Rizwan went for 37, caught behind off Cummins - although third umpire Michael Gough took several replays before deciding it was not a no-ball delivery.

Starc ended the resistance of Yasir Shah (26) and then had Shaheen Afridi out for a duck, before 16-year-old debutant Naseem Shah pushed an inside edge past the stumps to survive the hat-trick ball.

Asad Shafiq had at least steadied the innings somewhat with a stoic 76 before he was bowled by Cummins, who is playing a first home Test since taking over at the top of the world rankings.

Starc claimed a fourth wicket with Thursday's final delivery when he caught Naseem for seven. Cummins finished with figures of three for 60.
