England v South Africa day two commentary

1910: A fascinating day's cricket with England taking contol after some stellar performanaces. Alastair Cook missed out on the century he deserved for all his hard work in testing conditions yesterday. Ben Stokes then took the hosts to a challenging total with a sparkling century, before debutant Toby Roland-Jones picked up four wickets to put South Africa under the cosh. England will now look to enforce the follow-on tomorrow and with the tourists still without the unwell Vernon Philander, it is hard to see them getting out of this. 

Over 43: South Africa 126-8 (Bavuma 34, Morkel 2)
Last over of the day and the light meter is out again. England told it has to be a spinner so Moeen returns. Bavuma declines a single as England crowd the bat, but next ball picks up a couple.

Over 42: South Africa 124-8 (Bavuma 32, Morkel 2)
Morkel has to fend off a short-pitched ball by Broad and it lands safe. Big appeals for lbw which is rejected and first impressions are that it is going down the legside. Morkel drives and it takes a good stop from Anderson at mid-on to prevent a boundary.

Over 41: South Africa 124-8 (Bavuma 32, Morkel 2)
Morkel gets a single off Roland-Jones' first ball to get himself off strike. Bavuma is almost undone by an inswinger but sees out the rest of the over as we approach the close.

Over 40: South Africa 123-8 (Bavuma 32, Morkel 1)
Broad is restored to the attack and finds the edge of Rabada from around the wicket, but the batsman manages to keep it down and Stokes makes a fine diving stop.

WICKET! Rabada b Broad 30

Broad entices Rabada forward and gets it to jag back enough to clip the top of off stump - fine delivery. 

Broad offers Bavuma soem width and he cashes in, driving him to the biundary for four and he ends the over with another four.

Over 39: South Africa 114-7 (Bavuma 24, Rabada 30)
Another streaky shot from Rabada off Roand-Jones nets him a boundary as it did in the previous over. Bavuma then edges past gully and it brings up the 50 partnership. 

Over 38: South Africa 103-7 (Bavuma 19, Rabada 24)
Rabada ends up flat out as he digs out a dangerous yorker fom Stokes and then clips through mid-wicket for a couple.

Over 37: South Africa 100-7 (Bavuma 19, Rabada 21)
It's to be Roland-Jones from the Vauxhall End and Rabada gets a streaky four through the slip cordon as he looked to pull his bat away. A quick single brings up the South Africa 100 and it's been a real struggle. 

Over 36: South Africa 95-7 (Bavuma 19, Rabada 16)
The light has improved and Stokes is brought back as England look to wrap up the innings with 60 still needed to avoid the follow on. Stokes drops the ball as he is running in so he will have to start again and it's a good ball, aimed at middle-and-off well defended by Bavuma.

Over 35: South Africa 94-7 (Bavuma 19, Rabada 15)
No real turn yet for the spinners as Moeen continues, after England enquired whethere the light had improved enough so they could bring back the quicks.

Over 34: South Africa 90-7 (Bavuma 17, Rabada 13)
Rabada gets off strike with an easy single off Root and Bavuma adds another to the total. 

Over 33: South Africa 88-7 (Bavuma 16, Rabada 12)
It's Moeen from the Vauxhall End and Bavuma sweeps the first ball for a single. Two leg byes follow and these are all precious runs for South Africa.

Over 32: South Africa 84-7 (Bavuma 15, Rabada 11)
The umpires have got the light meter out and as a result Root has to bring himself on so they can stay out there, or at least prolong the chances of doing so. Rabada drives down the ground and gets a couple.

Over 31: South Africa 81-7 (Bavuma 14, Rabada 9)
Bavuma takes a single and has plenty of faih in Rabada, although every run is vital for South Africa at present. Rabada gets squared up and gets away with a miscued shot though guly for four.

Over 30: South Africa 76-7 (Bavuma 13, Rabada 5)
Anderson strikes Bavuma on the pads and there is a stifled appeal, but it was clearly going down legside. Play and a miss from Rabada and you feel another wicket is just around the corner.

Over 29: South Africa 75-7 (Bavuma 13, Rabada 5)
Bavuma gets a thickish outside edge as he looks to drive Stokes, but it's safe and earns him a couple of runs. Rabada picks up a boundary with a good looking cover drive that Malan almost pulls back 

Over 28: South Africa 68-7 (Bavuma 10, Rabada 1)
Anderson beats Rabada all ends up with a ball going away from him.  He then gets one to go between bat and pad which just misses the stumps - England are all over South Africa here.

WICKET! Maharaj c Cook b Stokes 5

Maharaj has a nibble outside off stump and Cook takes the catch at first slip to give Stokes his first wicket of the innings.

Bavuma drives Anderson down the ground for a couple as Broad does the chasing. 

Over 25: South Africa 59-6 (Bavuma 2, Maharaj 5)
Bavuma does well to keep down a rising delivery from Stokes with gully lurking. Another lifts, this time to the taller Maharaj and it's not getting any easier for the tourists.

WICKET! Morris c & b Anderson 2

A frustrated Morris attempts a drive and drills it straight back to Anderson who takes a sharp return catch. A quick check is made for the no ball and although it's tight it's a legal delivery.

New batsman Maharaj gets offs the mark with a quick single. Hero-of-the-hour Roland-Jones throws at the stumps, misses and it's four over-throws.

A change in the attack as Stokes is brought on and he starts with a maiden to keep the pressure on.

Anderson again passes the outside edge of Morris' bat, before one keeps very low and just misses off stump.

Bavuma takes a quick single to get off the mark but there is some hesitation and Anderson has a throw at the stumps but Morris is safely home. In all that excitement, South Afric bring up their 50.

Morris continues to ride his luck outside off stump, this time against Anderson and batting looks to be a torrid exercise at the moment in what was a maiden over.

Roland-Jones continues and with Philander at hospital, South Africa are in deep trouble. Morris plays and misses to an inswinger but gets off strie with a leg-bye.

Anderson returns and first ball Du Plessis shoulders arms and is struck on the pads. He is given out and although South Africa review, the captain must trudge off.

Roland-Jones overpitches and De Kock drives him down the ground for looked like four but Anderson pulls it back and sloppy running sees them only get two.

De Kock attempts to work the ball to the legside but gets a leading edge and the ball loops up to Stokes at gully.

Huge appeal for lbw as Bavuma faces his first ball. Umpire shakes his head and Engkand do not review.

Broad sends down his eighth over and it's a containing maiden.

Roland-Jones just strays down legside and De Kock helps it on its way for four. Another lbw appeal for England but again no review. Good decision as replays show it pitched outside the line. De Kock then plays and misses before driving down the ground for a second four in an eventful over.

Broad is short and wide, allowing De Kock to punch him to the boundary.

Big appeal from Roland-Jones for lbw against De Kock, but the umpire shakes his head after at least giving it some thought and England decide against a review.

WICKET! Amla c Bairstow b Roland-Jones 6

Rising delivery from Roland-Jones takes the glove of the dangerous and Bairstow takes a regulation catch behond the stumps. Amla walks and South Africa are in big troubl.

Amla gets off the mark against Broad with a textbook cover drive that was nothing more than a push. 

Over 11: South Africa 23-2 (Amla 0, De Kock 0)
Roland-Jones entices Kuhn forward and manages to move the ball away, but it's a long way from the edge.

WICKET! Kuhn lbw Roland-Jones 15

Kuhn is caught on the crease as he ries to whip the ball into mid-wicket and adjudged leg before, but there is relief for England as the bowler was perilously close to the line and in danger of conceding a no ball.

Broad resumes from the Pavilion End and Kuhn hammers him to the cover boundary for four.

Over 9: South Africa 18-1 (Kuhn 10, Amla 0)
Final over before tea and again Elgar has a little nibble outside of off stump. 

WICKET! Elgar c Bairstow v Roland-Jones 8

Big appeal for caught behind which is given by the umpire. Elgar looks bemused and instantly calls for the review but it shows there is an edge and Roland-Jones - who alos looks a little shocked - has his first Test wicket. 

REVIEW! With two balls left to finish the over after tea, Roland-Jones strikes new batsman Hashim Amla on the pads and a huge appeal is turned down. England review and although the ball would have hit the stumps, it's umpire's call so Amla survives.

Over 8: South Africa 18-0 (Elgar 8, Kuhn 10)
Broad continues and produces a peach of a delivery that beats Elgar all ends up, but no edge is forthcoming.

Over 7: South Africa 17-0 (Elgar 7, Kuhn 10)
After impressing with the bat, Roland-Jones now has the ball in his hand. Elgar drives loosely and it falls just short of Tom Westley at point and they pick up a fortunate single. Kuhn punishes a ball that is short amd wide and it disappears for four. 

Over 6: South Africa 12-0 (Elgar 6, Kuhn 6)
Kuhn clips the ball away for a four and Broad concedes his first runs. Big appeal for a catch by Bairstow down the legside and it is rejected. England players look at one another but there is no review.

Over 5: South Africa 8-0 (Elgar 6, Kuhn 2)
Anderson strays down legside and Elgar clips him round the corner for a boundary.

Over 4: South Africa 3-0 (Elgar 2, Kuhn 1)
Broad continues to build the pressure and it is now three maidens in a row, with Elgar close to an inside edge as he chased a wide one. He then also plays and misses the final ball and its tough going for the openers here.

Signs of swing for Anderson with the floodlights now on and he also collects a maiden.

Broad shares the new ball and starts with a maiden.

James Anderson gets us back under way and Elgar scampers a quick single to get South Africa up and running in what should be a testing time for them just before tea. Kuhn is also off the mark as Dawid Malan makes a half stop. 

1510: A superb innings from Stokes which could be so vital in deciding who wins this game. With overcast conditions, you would have to say that with 353 runs on the board it is advantage England with South Africa now having to face a testing spell out in the middle before tea and then an extended final session as we try to make up for yesterday's lost overs. With Philander having gone to hospital for Tests on the 'bug' he has picked up, the tourists are effectively a man down and England will look to take full advantage.

Huge cheers as Anderson nudges one round the corner to get off the mark and bring up England's 350.

WICKET! Stokes c Rabada b Morkel 112

Stokes goes for another big shot but does not get all of it and Rabada takes a good catch running in from long-off.

Over 102: England 349-9 (Stokes 109, Anderson 0)
So what does Stokes do now with only Anderson for company? He turns down a single first ball and then drives the ball down the ground. Du Pessis takes the catch but as he falls back he hits the ropes and it's a six. The next one is launched down the ground and into the crowd - a magnificent way to bring up a vital century for his side. And now it's three sixes in a row courtesy of a slog-sweep before Maharaj fires one outside of off-stump that is almost a wide.

A fielding mix-up allows Broad a single off Rabada's first ball and Stokes adds another with a flick off his legs.

WICKET! Broad c Amla b Rabada 3

Little or no footwork from Broad who is squared up and edges behind where Amla takes a comfortable catch at first slip.

Over 100: England 329-8 (Stokes 90, Broad 2)
Maharaj and South Africa appeal for an inside edge to slip from Broad, but the umpire is not interested and there is no hint of a review. Stokes then smashes the spinner into the rowd for a huge six.

Over 99: England 322-8 (Stokes 84, Broad 1)
Stokes accepts a single first ball against Rabada and it's not long before Broad is tested with a short ball. He gets off the mark as he squirts the ball out to mid-wicket. Stokes hooks the final ball of the over for four.

Over 98: England 316-8 (Stokes 79, Broad 0)
Spinner Maharaj returns and Philander's enforced absence is a huge blow at present with runs coming thick and fast. Stokes takes a single and the ball is once more checked before being given back. 

WICKET! Roland-Jones lbw Maharaj 25

Good ball from Maharaj which deceives Roland-Jones. He is hit in-front and told by Stokes not to review so an entertaining innings comes to an end. 

Over 97: England 315-7 (Stokes 78, Roland-Jones 25)
Rabada returns and Stokes takes a single off the first ball. Roland-Jones shows his defence is also sound as he keeps out an 88mph yorker. He pulls for a hard-hit four and has raced to 25 off 23 balls. 

Over 96: England 310-7 (Stokes 77, Roland-Jones 21)
Stokes clips Morris off his legs for a boundary and then collects a couple thanks to a fumble at mid-wicket. A quick single brings up the 300 for England and that looks a decent total to me in these conditions. Roland-Jones cashes in on a legside half volley and it's not been Morris' day so far. And it gets worse as Roland-Jones swats him away for a six with a not-so-convincing attempted hook shot.

Over 95: England 293-7 (Stokes 70, Roland-Jones 11)
Roland-Jones drives Morkel down the ground for a glorious four but he does have a first-class century to his name so we should not be surprised by his batting prowess. 

Over 94: England 289-7 (Stokes 70, Roland-Jones 7)
Morris replaces Rabada at the Vauxhall End and Stokes chases a wide loosener and is within a whisker of getting a bottom edge to the keeper. Stokes attempts a pull shot and totally miscues, but it falls safe. Roland-Jones tickles the ball off his legs for a boundary and then claims a single off the final ball. 

Over 93: England 283-7 (Stokes 69, Roland-Jones 2)
Stokes takes a single against Morkel off the fourth ball and Roland-Jones comfortably deals with the last two without having to play a shot.

Over 92: England 282-7 (Stokes 68, Roland-Jones 2)
Stokes is very watchful in this Rabada over and it will be interesting to see how much he trusts the lower order in terms of strike.  Debutant Roland-Jones gets off the mark with a couple and he will feel a lot better now. 

Over 91: England 279-7 (Stokes 68, Roland-Jones 0)
Morkel gets one to jag back on Moeen from around the wicket but it hits the thigh pad and not the bat and next ball he whistles one past the outside edge. Big appeal from the Proteas for what could be an LBW or caught behind.

WICKET! Moeen c Du Kock b Morkel 16

Umpire says not out but replays show an inside edge onto pad before Du Kock takes the catch behind the stumps so Moeen has to go.

Over 90: England 279-6 (Stokes 68, Moeen 16)
Stokes turns Rabada off his hips for a single and good running between him and Moeen yields another run to the total. Stokes does well to play down a deivery that climbed on him off a length so still signs that there is still plenty in the pitch for the bowlers.

Over 89: England 275-6 (Stokes 66, Moeen 14)
There is a bit of drizzle in the air and one or two umbrellas are going up in the crowd - nothing to worry about as yet though. Stokes takes a single off Morkel before Moeen is treated to some short stuff.

Over 88: England 274-6 (Stokes 65, Moeen 14)
Philander is still off the field so Rabada resumes from the Vauxhall End and Moeen guides the ball down past gully for a single. Stokes takes a single and he will be keen to get on with things after getting a little bit stuck prior to lunch.

Over 87: England 270-6 (Stokes 64, Moeen 11)
Morkel gets us back under way from the Pavilion End bowling to Moeen. Finds a good length straightaway and forces the batsman to defend until Moeen is able to take a single off the final ball.

1330: England are now even money favourites with Sky Bet to win the match, while South Africa are 7/2 and the draw 15/8. Ben Stokes is 11/8 to get a century and 4/7 not to. Get all the latest match odds here!

1302: 98 runs have been scored in the session for the loss of two wickets and England will be fairly pleased with where they are. It looks as though 350 will be a very good score with plenty left in the wicket for the bowlers, so much will depend on Stokes and Moeen to get them there.

Over 86: England 269-6 (Stokes 64, Moeen 10)
The umpires are asked to check the ball but they are happy with it and it is thrown back. Moeen tries to leave a ball from Rabada but is not quick enough and the ball goes past gully and to the boundary. A short leg is brought in and this will be the last over before lunch as we wait for the helmet to come out. Ali picks up three with a crisp drive to bring the session to an end.

Over 85: England 262-6 (Stokes 64, Moeen 3)
Morkel produces a good short ball to Moeen who does well to rock back out of the way. Moeen drives but it's straight to Kune at point. Morkel gets one to nip back and it crashes into the thigh pad, just missing the inside edge. He beats the outside edge of Stokes to finish an excellent over.

Rabada is bang on the money once again and he concedes just one to Moeen.

Over 83: England 260-6 (Stokes 64, Moeen 1)
Stokes take a single and I think it is important for England no to get too bogged down here. Moeen gets off the mark by flicking Morkel off his hips for a single.

Over 82: England 258-6 (Stokes 63, Moeen 0)
Rabada is back and he finds the outside edge of Bairstow's bat, but he manages to control it and gets a couple down to third man. 

WICKET! Bairstow c Du Plessis b Rabada 36

Perfect length and hint of away swing from Rabada who commits Bairstow to the shot and Du Plessis takes a fine catch at second slip.

Over 81: England 256-5 (Stokes 63, Bairstow 34)
The new ball is taken as South Africa really need to break this partnership. Morkel gets first use with Philander off the field still suffering with illness as he was yesterday. A probing, maiden over but no alarms for Stokes.

Stokes takes a single in this, the last over before the new ball. 

Over 79: England 255-5 (Stokes 62, Bairstow 34)
Just a single from this Morris over to Stokes.

Over 78: England 254-5 (Stokes 61, Bairstow 34)
Stokes slog sweeps but good fielding from Morris keeps it down to a single. Bairstow helps himself to a single, as does Stokes but I thought England might have gone after Maharaj ahead of the new ball. But I suppose it's also just as important to have wickets in hand at this stage.

Morris returns and Bairstow turns him away for a single which brings up the 250 for England. A bit of a lull at he moment - it seems as though everyone is now waiting for that new ball.

Tidy over from Maharaj with Bairstow scrambling a singleoff the final ball.

Over 75: England 248-5 (Stokes 58, Bairstow 31)
Bairstow square cuts Rabada for a sparkling four and then adds another two to his total with some quick running. 

Over 74: England 241-5 (Stokes 58, Bairstow 24)
Maharaj continues and Stokes takes a single as does Bairstow as we edge nearer to the new ball.

Over 73: England 239-5 (Stokes 57, Bairstow 23)
Rabada returns and Stokes pulls him - it's just out of the reach of mid-on and goes for four. It brings up Stokes' 50 which has come off 73 balls with seven fours. Good work from Morkel coming round from fine leg cuts off a boundary but Stokes still adds another three.

Over 72: England 230-5 (Stokes 48, Bairstow 23)
Spinner Keshav Maharaj comes on for Rabada and is immediately swept for four by Bairstow. The batsman then drives him down the ground and it's not far from the bowler's dive. A reverse sweep follows and it's fine and speeds away for the third boundary of the over.

Over 71: England 218-5 (Stokes 48, Bairstow 11)
Stokes is tempted into the hook but keeps it down and gets a single to Rabada down at long leg. Morris is again too ful and Bairstow crashes him through the covers for four. 

Over 70: England 212-5 (Stokes 47, Bairstow 7)
Kigiso Rabada replaces Philander at the Vauxhall End and Bairstow picks up a single first ball. Stokes also adds another to his total before Bairstow is almost undone by some extra bounce; he manages to fend it off and the ball lands well short of gully.

Over 69: England 210-5 (Stokes 46, Bairstow 6)
Chris Morris replaces Morkel but he serves up a juicy full toss which Stokes crashes away to the boundary to bring up England's 200. Great timing from Stokes sees him dig out a full length ball which goes for another four. Stokes claims anothet boundary, driving a half volley for four.

Over 68: England 198-5 (Stokes 34, Bairstow 6)
Bairstow cashes in on a Philander half volley with a drive for four through extra cover. But the bowler hits back with the final ball of the over which goes past the bat with Bairstow certainly playing a shot.

Over 67: England 194-5 (Stokes 34, Bairstow 2)
Stokes rocks onto the back foot and pulls Morkel for four in front of square. He then drives him straight back down the ground but Morkel manages to get a hand on it which stops it going for four. Two leg byes follow and Morkel does well to get a foot to another crisply hit straight drive.

Over 66: England 186-5 (Stokes 28, Bairstow 2)
Stokes clips Philander off his legs for another single. Bairstow gets off the mark with little more than a defensive prod through mid-wicket for a couple.

Over 65: England 183-5 (Stokes 27, Bairstow 0)
Stokes pulls aggressively but it's only a single. Cook is then hit on the pads and the umpire raises hs finger for LBW.

WICKET! Cook lbw Morkel 88

Cook immediately reviews but replays show the ball is just hitting the stumps so it's umpire's call and he has to go.

Over 64: England 182-4 (Cook 88, Stokes 26)
Philander whistles one past Cook's outside edge and the batsman certainly nibbled at that one. Philander then produces a beauty that again goes past the outside edge - maiden over.

Morkel is testing both batsman from around the wicket, but he offers Cook one in the slot and he punches it away for three through the covers.

Over 62: England 179-4 (Cook 85, Stokes 26)
CHANCE! Cook edges to Faf Du Pessis at second slip, but it lands just short of his outstretched fingers. Soft hands saves Cook on this occasion. The batsman defends one to gully, but this one is along the ground. Cook gets off strike with a quick single. Stokes brings up 2,000 Test runs with a glorious clip through mid-wicket.

Over 61: England 174-4 (Cook 84, Stokes 22)
Morne Morkel is on from the Pavilion End and it's three slips and a gully for Stokes. The batsman is solid in defence and it's a maiden.

It remains overcast but there is a bit of blue sky poking through in places. Vernon Philander gets us under way bowling to Stokes who flicks the ball off his legs for a single. Philander is instantly on the money but Cook is able to turn him away for a couple.

1040: Latest match odds from Sky Bet and England are 11/10, while South Africa are 11/4 and the draw 2/1. Cook is 4/9 to score a century in the first innings with Stokes 9/2, Jonny Bairstow 9/1 and Moeen Ali 12/1. With the series locked at 1-1, this is a pivotal match. England will resume on 171-4, with only 59 overs possible on the opening day due to rain. Alastair Cook is unbeaten on 82, with Ben Stokes 21 not out alongside him.
