County Championship review: Surrey draw with Kent

A review of Thursday's action in the Specsavers County Championship as Surrey were held to a draw by Kent.

Day Four

Division One

Surrey lost Sam Curran to injury and were unable to break Kent's resistance in an entertaining Specsavers County Championship Division One draw at Beckenham.

Curran made an early breakthrough on the final day as he bowled Adam Riley but the England left-arm seamer went off soon afterwards with an apparent hamstring complaint, leaving Surrey a bowler light.

Morne Morkel and Rikki Clarke each took three wickets for the defending champions but Kent, resuming on 42 for one in pursuit of 426, showed spirit to hold on as they finished on 352 for eight.

Sean Dickson fell nine runs short of a second century in the match but Kent's opening batsman and fellow South Africans Heino Kuhn (81) and Wiaan Mulder (68no) dug in to leave Surrey frustrated.

Kyle Abbott, Keith Barker and Fidel Edwards took three wickets apiece as Hampshire thrashed Nottinghamshire by 244 runs on the Isle of Wight for their third win of the season.

Only Chris Nash (60) showed any sort of resilience for Nottinghamshire, who were all out for 194.

Nottinghamshire's winless run in first-class cricket stretched to 12 matches, leading Peter Moores to admit: "There is no hiding place from it and we have been well beaten."

Division Two

In Division Two, Northamptonshire acting captain Adam Rossington registered a battling half-century to repel Sussex, who settled for a draw at Wantage Road.

Northamptonshire, set 394 for victory, slipped to 162 for five with more than 50 overs remaining on the final day.

However, Rossington (69no from 168 balls) and Brett Hutton (25no off 104 deliveries) carried Northants to 288 for six before the players shook hands.

Day Three

Division One

Somerset needed just over two hours of the third day to wrap up a 49-run victory over Warwickshire at Taunton and consolidate their position at the top of the Specsavers County Championship.

Sam Hain ended unbeaten on 92 and featured in a last-wicket stand of 49 with Oliver Hannon-Dalby (13) before the visitors were bowled out for 189 in their second innings, with Lewis Gregory claiming four for 48.

Somerset took 20 points from their third Championship victory in four games, while their opponents had to settle for three and remain anchored at the foot of the First Division.

Ajinkya Rahane marked his Hampshire debut with a century before Sam Northeast boosted his England Test ambitions with three figures of his own as Hampshire dominated Nottinghamshire on the Isle of Wight.

Rahane became just the seventh player to collect a ton on his debut for Hampshire having made 119.

At the other end for a record 257-run stand for the third wicket, Northeast continued his eye-catching early season form with an almost impeccable 133.

Hampshire eventually declared on 367 for five with a 438-run lead, which was whittled down to 397 at close, with Nottinghamshire reaching stumps on 42 for two.

Kent, needing 426 for a second win of the campaign, lost only Zak Crawley as they closed on 46 for one against Surrey.

Earlier, Sam Curran hit 80 and Scott Borthwick 58 as Surrey were bowled out for 280.

Division Two

In the Second Division, Lancashire leapfrogged promotion rivals Worcestershire with a hard-fought six-wicket victory at Old Trafford.

Chasing 126 on a challenging surface, Lancashire slipped to 32 for four before lunch, only to recover through their captain Dane Vilas and fifth-wicket partner Rob Jones, who shared an unbroken 95 inside 30 overs.

South African Vilas led the way with 60 not out off 89 balls, while Jones finished unbeaten on 31 as victory was wrapped up midway through the third afternoon.

The 20-point win is their third in a row at the start of the season - the first time they have won their first three Championship matches in a campaign since 1995 and the days of Mike Atherton and Wasim Akram.

Gloucestershire secured their first win of the championship season by defeating Durham by six wickets at Emirates Riverside.

The visitors started the day requiring only 53 runs for victory after opening pairing Chris Dent and Miles Hammond had knocked off over half of the 117 target the previous evening.

Although the visitors lost three further wickets, Gloucestershire were able to ease their way to their maiden Championship triumph to move up to third in the table.

Durham, meanwhile, remain rooted to the foot of the standings after slipping to a fourth successive defeat.

Tom Cullen held his nerve to score an unbeaten half century that steered Glamorgan to a thrilling two-wicket victory over Derbyshire.

The 27-year-old wicketkeeper, who was only playing because Chris Cooke is injured, scored 51 from 88 balls to take Glamorgan to their target of 246 with help from Andrew Salter (26) and Lukas Carey (nine not out).

Derbyshire were favourites when they reduced Glamorgan to 162 for seven with Ravi Rampaul taking three wickets, but Cullen played superbly to give his side their first championship win of the season.

Day Two

Division One

Somerset remain on course to strengthen their position at the top of the Specsavers County Championship, needing just four wickets to hand Warwickshire a third defeat in three.

Chasing 239 to win, the visitors were staring down the barrel on 103 for six at the close, with the pitch still offering plenty of assistance to the seamers.

Lewis Gregory claimed two wickets for Somerset, with Craig Overton, Jack Leach and Tom Abell taking one each, while Tim Ambrose was run out.

Overton had earlier finished with five for 31 when Warwickshire were bowled out in their first innings for 135 before Liam Norwell's seven for 41 saw Somerset dismissed for 164.

Nottinghamshire skipper Steven Mullaney became the first player to score a first-class century on the Isle of Wight since 1961 as he frustrated Hampshire.

Mullaney dragged his side out of two collapses to reach his 14th first-class ton, despite surviving three drops.

Mullaney's 102 took Nottinghamshire to 239, a 71-run first innings deficit, before Hampshire closed on three for one.

Sean Dickson's ninth first-class century helped Kent narrowly avoid the follow-on against Surrey.

The 27-year-old dug in for five-and-a-half for 128 with 14 fours as the hosts conspired to lose their last nine wickets for 97 runs to be dismissed for 294 and give Surrey a 145-run first-innings lead.

In the three overs through to stumps, Surrey reached 11 without loss in their second innings.

Division Two

In Division Two, Lancashire are on course for their third consecutive win against Worcestershire.

The advantage has swung back and forth throughout two days which have seen ball dominate on a surface offering some help but not masses.

Now, the visitors have a lot of work to do if they are to swing the pendulum back in their favour, although they are not out of it just yet with a lead of 120 and one second-innings wicket in hand.

Having conceded a first-innings lead of 29 at lunch, they reached close at 149 for nine from 66.1 overs. Richard Gleeson took four for 35 for the hosts.

Sussex took control against Northamptonshire, reducing them to 242 for six and posting a total themselves of 422.

Ben Brown (156) and Chris Jordan (166) saw their seventh-wicket partnership come to an end on 309.

Daniel Douthwaite inspired a Glamorgan fightback to set up an intriguing finale against Derbyshire after Ravi Rampaul had celebrated his first five wicket haul for three years.

The West Indian seamer claimed five for 94 as Glamorgan were bowled out for 346, 32 runs behind, with Billy Root scoring 68 and Douthwaite 39 in his first championship innings.

Derbyshire were going well at 96 for one but then lost seven wickets for 60 runs with Douthwaite taking four in five overs, and closed on 171 for nine, a lead of 203.

Gloucestershire need just 57 runs with nine wickets in hand to condemn Durham to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Day One

Division One

Somerset were bowled out for 209 as 17 wickets fell on the opening day of their Specsavers County Championship Division One match with winless Warwickshire at Taunton.

After an uncontested toss the table-toppers were dismissed before tea, but Warwickshire's batsmen also struggled, collapsing to 79 for five before ending the day on 110 for seven.

Warwickshire's Oliver Hannon-Dalby was the pick of the bowlers, claiming a career-best five for 18 while Craig Overton took three for 25 for Somerset.

Will Jacks scored a maiden first-class hundred for Surrey as they reached 420 for nine against Kent in Beckenham.

The Surrey batsman, playing in his 12th first-class game, dug in to score 120 and put on a 175-run sixth-wicket partnership with Scott Borthwick (95) as the pair helped their side recover from 65 for five.

Kent debutant Wiaan Mulder took four wickets for 103 while the other four bowlers picked up one wicket each.

Hampshire reached 288 for six as Joe Weatherley scored his first half-century for 11 months against Nottinghamshire on the Isle of Wight.

Weatherley hit 66 with Steven Mullaney and Jake Ball taking two wickets each as first-class cricket was played on the island for the first time since 1963.

Division Two

In Division Two, Worcestershire's Wayne Parnell shone with the ball and the bat as 15 wickets fell in the clash with Lancashire at the Emirates Old Trafford.

James Anderson recorded his 46th first-class five-wicket haul but the visitors fought back from 38 for seven to score 172, with Parnell hitting 63.

Lancashire were 88 for five at stumps, with Parnell claiming three wickets for 19 runs.

Sussex's Ben Brown and Chris Jordan produced a remarkable recovery from 68 for six to 370 for six against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.

The pair put on a stand of 302, with Jordan on 158 and Brown 153 at the close of play.

Gloucestershire bowled Durham out for 158 before reaching 120 for five in reply, leaving themselves just 38 runs behind the hosts at Chester-Le-Street.

With 15 wickets falling on day one, Gloucestershire's David Payne took four for 40 while Matt Salisbury took three for 18 for Durham.

Billy Root scored a half-century as Glamorgan fought back on the second day of their game against Derbyshire at Derby.

Root, who is banned from bowling because of a suspect action, hit 53 from 68 balls as Glamorgan reached 214 for four in reply to Derbyshire's 378.
