Australia v India Second Test report: Day five

Australia have won their first Test match since the ball-tampering controversy as their attack blew apart the India tail for a 146-run victory.

Day five report

The hosts only needed 15 overs to take the remaining five wickets in Perth and level the series at 1-1.

After starting the fifth day on 112 for five, India lost the key wicket of Hanuma Vihari for 28 when he holed out off Mitchell Starc.

From then on, it was just a matter of time before Australia sealed the win.

Rishabh Pant, who raced to 30 runs from 61 balls, was well caught by Peter Handscomb off Nathan Lyon and an over later Umesh Yadav popped a shot back to Starc for two.

Pat Cummins wrapped up the last two wickets in the space of four balls, Ishant Sharma edging behind for a duck and Jasprit Bumrah launching a shot high into the Western Australian sky with Cummins positioning himself to take the catch.

The win is the first for Tim Paine as captain and Australia's first in seven Tests, after former captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned for their part in a ball-tempering plot during a Test in Cape Town in March.

The next Test between India and Australia starts in Melbourne on Boxing Day.

Day four report

Australia edged closer to levelling their Test series against India as Nathan Lyon dismissed visiting captain Virat Kohli on day four in Perth.

Lyon, who took five wickets in the first innings, snared the key scalp of Kohli as India reached 112 for five at stumps and requiring 175 more runs on the final day to seal an unlikely win.

A victory for Australia now looks to be within reach after another good performance with the ball at the Perth Stadium.

India, who won the opening Test, enjoyed a good start to the day as they looked to skittle out the hosts and set themselves a reasonable run chase.

Mohammed Shami shone and needed just five overs after lunch to take four wickets as he sealed career-best figures of six for 56.

Australia's tail rallied and the hosts were eventually dismissed for a total of 243 - setting India a target of 287 to move 2-0 ahead.

Resuming on 132 for four, captain Tim Paine (37) was the first of Shami's victims as Usman Khawaja top-scored with 72 before also falling to the seamer.

Mitchell Starc set the tone for Australia at the start of the visitors' chase, bowling Lokesh Rahul for a duck with the fourth ball of the final innings.

Cheteshwar Pujara was caught behind off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood for four before Kohli (17) was snapped up at slip as Lyon claimed another wicket in the match.

Murali Vijay (20) and Ajinkya Rahane (30) failed to build on decent starts as Lyon and Hazlewood struck again.

That leaves unbeaten pair Hanuma Vihari and Rishabh Pant - on 24 and nine, respectively - at the crease heading into the fifth and final day.

Day three report

Australia took control on day three of the second Test against India despite a century from visiting captain Virat Kohli in Perth.

The hosts bowled their opponents out for 283 just after lunch, with Nathan Lyon taking five wickets before the hosts looked to build on their lead of 43 in the second innings.

Aaron Finch retired hurt having been struck on the glove by a delivery from Mohammed Shami while on 25, but it was confirmed by coach Justin Langer that the opener had not fractured his finger with the hope being he would be able to bat on day four.

Marcus Harris (20), who was fine to continue after the ball hit his helmet, Shaun Marsh (five), Peter Handscomb (13) and Travis Head (19) all fell cheaply, with Shami taking two for 23, before play closed with Usman Khawaja unbeaten on 41 and captain Tim Paine on eight, with the total 132 for four.

Earlier, Kohli had posted 123 as India added to their overnight score of 172 for three.

The skipper, who had started the day on 82, was removed by a Handscomb catch off Pat Cummins, which required a review from the third umpire before being dismissed.

That began a lower-order collapse in which India lost their last five wickets for 35 runs.

Ajinkya Rahane (51) in the first over of the day, to end a stand of 91 with Kohli, was among the scalps Lyon (five for 67) claimed, while Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood ended up with two wickets apiece.

Day two report

Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane hit unbeaten half centuries to leave India trailing Australia by 154 runs at stumps on day two of the second Test.

Captain Kohli made 82 off 181 balls, including nine fours, and Rahane added 51 as the tourists closed on 172 for three in Perth.

After Australia were all out for 326 in the first innings, India made a dreadful early response with openers Lokesh Rahul and Murali Vijay dismissed for a gain of only two runs.

Vijay was clean bowled for a duck on the final ball of the third over just before lunch by Mitchell Starc, while a superb yorker from Josh Hazlewood removed Rahul for two 13 deliveries later.

India, who lead the series 1-0 after victory in Adelaide, finally put some meaningful runs on the board as Kohli shared a third-wicket stand of 74 with Cheteshwar Pujara.

Pujara was then undone by another Starc delivery, edging it into the hands of Australia captain Tim Paine on 24.

The hosts began the day with a lead of 277 and four wickets remaining following half-centuries from Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch and Travis Head on Friday.

Paine and Pat Cummins helped add an extra 49 runs to that total. Cummins contributed 19 before being skittled by Umesh Yadav, while Paine hit 38 off 89 balls prior to being trapped lbw by Jasprit Bumrah.

Pace bowler Ishant Sharma, who removed Peter Handscomb and Head on day one, ended the innings with figures of four for 41 after seeing Starc and Hazlewood each caught by Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.

Day one report

Half-centuries from Marcus Harris, Aaron Finch and Travis Head powered Australia to a score of 277 for six at stumps on the first day of the second Test against India in Perth.

Under warm skies and looking at a green pitch, Australia won the toss and elected to bat, with Harris and Finch quickly making good on the decision as they put on 112 for the first wicket.

Jasprit Bumrah was the man to end India's frustration with a full and straight delivery as he trapped Finch lbw moments after he reached 50.

It was the start of a strong spell from Bumrah, who made Usman Khawaja miss twice before the same over was done and then followed up with a maiden.

Australia's momentum was gone and they were slow to put on runs before Khawaja followed Finch back to the pavilion for just five, edging Umesh Yadav behind having never settled.

Harris was soon out for 70, edging Hanuma Vihari behind and Australia were grateful to Shaun Marsh - who made 45 - and Head (58) for restoring order as Peter Handscomb also fell cheaply for seven.

Together Marsh and Head put on 84 for the fifth wicket before Marsh was victim of a superb catch by Rahane in the slips off Vihari.

After Head's afternoon was ended by Ishant Sharma, Australia put on another 26 runs before the close.

Tim Paine ended the day unbeaten on 16 while Pat Cummins had 11.
