3:48 Chepstow

Catching PUNCHBOWL FLYER right is tricky, but this is his easiest assignment for some time and after running his best race of the season at Catterick last time, despite finishing last of five, today could well be the day to catch him.

He’s basically been getting himself fitter this season whilst getting his mark down to something much more workable at the same time, and despite being beaten just over two lengths at Catterick last time over a trip probably on the short side, the handicapper has dropped him another 3lb and he’s now 12lb lower than he was at the start of the turf season.

He drops to Class 5 company for the first time since 2020. His only previous handicap start at Chepstow saw him run out an easy winner in a higher grade than this, and the rain that fell Saturday and Sunday was very much in his favour.

4:18 Chepstow

Like a few running at Chepstow today, LOUIS TREIZE is best described as a bit of a monkey, but he’s a dual winner of sprint races at this track, and looked as good as ever when running on late for second over C&D two starts back in a race won by the thriving Jacquelina, that mare completing a quick four-timer.

As usual, Louis Treize was slow to find stride before weaving his way through the field in the last furlong or so, and he needs a strong pace at this level to give him the luxury of passing tiring rivals. That did not happen in a small field here last time and he subsequently ran below form, albeit closing up late when the race was over.

His rider today is very inexperienced but presumably knows him at home and the only question is whether he can be cajoled to put his best foot forward. For all his quirks (can’t be in the stalls long, needs a blindfold and tends to get behind), he does win races as two wins and two seconds from nine handicap runs at Chepstow testify.

5:00 Carlisle

Questionable should take plenty of beating in Carlisle's finale, despite going up 5lb for being on the wrong side of the photo-finish at Haydock last time. She'd shown promise in her first three starts whilst getting a mark, but stepped up considerably to be beaten a short-head on her handicap debut last time, the front pair coming well clear of the rest.

The form of that handicap bow has had a couple of boosts since, with both the third and fourth running better again on their next respective starts and although Questionable steps back a furlong in trip here, this stiff finish should play to her strengths.

Despite the weight rise, she still gets to race in Class 5 company here, and she should be too strong for these, although the market has her about right.
