The third stadium built on this site, Hamburg's AOL Arena was fully rebuilt in time for the 2000-01 season at a total cost of almost 100million euros.
Work had begun in 1998 on the staged demolition and reconstruction of the stadium on the site of the old Volksparkstadion, the scene of West Germany's 1-0 defeat by East Germany in the 1974 World Cup.
The result was an 51,000 capacity arena that hosts Bundesliga club Hamburger SV and was given the much-coveted five-star award by UEFA. |
