Police carried out a controlled explosion on an abandoned car close to the main Winter Olympic press centre in Turin on Thursday, in what turned out to be a false alarm.

The car was left with its engine running close to an underpass, prompting police to tow away several surrounding cars and evacuate a nearby apartment building.

But police said later nothing suspicious was found in the car and they were still searching for its owner who had not immediately reported it stolen.
