Veteran Norwegian Kjetil Andre Aamodt claimed a record eighth Olympic alpine medal by winning men's super-G gold in Sestriere.
Aamodt retained the title he won in Salt Lake City four years ago with a 0.13 second winning margin over Austrian great Hermann Maier.
The 34-year-old's defence of his title had been in doubt after he was forced to miss last week's combined event due to a knee injury.
American Bode Miller, who started as one of the favourites to capture an elusive first Olympic gold, veered off course and failed to finish.
