Serena Williams won the Sanex Championship in Munich
on Sunday after Lindsay Davenport pulled out of the final with a knee injury.
Davenport was hurt towards the end of her semi-final victory over Kim Clijsters on Saturday.
She said: "I absolutely can't put any weight on my right knee. I really cannot
say how terrible I feel."
Davenport, whose injury denied her a crack at a fourth straight title, beat
Clijsters 1-6 6-3 7-6 (7/3) to secure her position as world number one ahead of
Jennifer Capriati.
Williams claimed her third tournament victory of the year and 11th of her
career in Munich, and she picked up around £513,000.
