Top seed Meghann Shaughnessy of the United
States won the Bell Challenge with a crushing 6-1 6-3 win over Croatian
Iva Majoli.
Shaughnessy, 22, captured her only other title in October 2000, when she
defeated Iroda Tulyaganova of Uzbekistan at the Heineken Open in Shanghai.
"Everything seemed to click today serving, returning,
attacking," said Shaughnessy, who needed just 55 minutes to wrap-up the match.
Shaughnessy made the most of her chances, converting five of nine break-point
opportunities.
Majoli did not help herself, serving nine double faults.
"I didn't play a good match," Majoli said. "At 3-3, I missed the easiest ball of
the match. I was missing a lot of first serves, my legs were not moving as they
should have. I was expecting myself to play better."
In her other two final appearances this year, Shaughnessy lost to Lindsay
Davenport at the State Farm Tennis Classic in March and was trounced by Venus
Williams at the Betty Barclay Cup in May.
Majoli, 24, reached the final in her Quebec debut.
Ranked 37th in the world, she failed to win her eighth career title and first
since the 1997 French Open.
