Hungary's Zsofia Gubacsi became the
lowest-ranked player to win on the WTA Tour this season, outlasting Maria Elena
Camerin of Italy, 1-6 6-3 7-6 (7-5), to capture the Grand Prix De S.A.R.
Ranked 109th in the world, Gubacsi completed her improbable run at this
tournament by defeating Camerin, who was ranked 120th.
On the way to her first WTA title, the 20-year-old from Budapest ousted second
seed Marta Marrero of Spain.
In May, Gubacsi won three matches to qualify for the French Open, then reached
the third round before losing to sixth seed Serena Williams.
Camerin was coming off a straight-sets victory over France's Emilie Loit after
eliminating fifth seed Ludmila Cervanova in the opening round and No. 8 Anca
Barna of Germany in the quarter-finals.
This inaugural event marked the fourth time this year that no seeded player has
advanced to the final.
