Dinara Safina ended a stellar week with a 3-6 6-2 6-2 victory over fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in the final of the Qatar Telecom German Open on Sunday.
It was the first career Tier I title for Safina, who also defeated world number one Justine Henin and eight-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams on her way to the final.
The 13th-seeded Safina captured her sixth career title and her first since the 2007 season opener at Gold Coast.
But the victory did not come easily for the 22-year-old, who was forced to overcome mistakes throughout the two-hour match with the seventh-seeded Dementieva.
After dropping three breaks en-route to losing the first set, Safina persevered to claim victory despite double-faulting three times in each of the final two sets.
