France's Tatiana Golovin claimed her first WTA title at the Bausch & Lomb Championships in Florida on Sunday by defeating top seed and defending champion Nadia Petrova in straight sets.
The world number 20 beat Petrova 6-2 6-1 in one hour 16 minutes to deny the Russian her eighth singles title on the women's tour.
The victory capped a fine week on the claycourts of Amelia Island for 19-year-old Golovin, who defeated former world number one Venus Williams en route to the final.
Having lost in her three previous finals, including a straight-sets loss to Petrova at Stuttgart in 2006, Golovin exacted revenge on the Russian at this Tier II event.
The eighth seed, who has played on the WTA circuit since 2002, broke Petrova six times in the match and saved seven of eight break points on her serve.
Golovin said afterwards: "This is probably the happiest day in my tennis career.''
