Nadia Petrova came from a set down to end Lucie Safarova's giant-killing run and win the Open Gaz de France on Sunday.
The fourth seed rallied to post a 4-6 6-1 6-4 victory in Paris.
Safarova had beaten three of the top five seeds - Nicole Vaidisova, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Justine Henin - on her way to the final, but after taking the first set another famous scalp proved beyond her.
She actually broke at the start of the second set to lead 1-0 but Petrova then rattled off six straight games and the momentum had swung her way.
She went on to complete victory in an hour and 48 minutes, but not without a little scare.
Petrova appeared to be in total command when she led the decider 5-1 before Safarova clawed her way back to 5-4.
Petrova was down 0-30 in the 10th game before she righted the ship and held serve to win the match and capture her seventh career title.
Afterwards Safarova refused to get down on herself, saying: "I beat players that I dreamed about beating so it would not be right to be sad because this has opened the way for the next tournaments."
