Francesca Schiavone is still looking for her first WTA Tour victory after losing 6-3 6-2 to Alona Bondarenko in the final of the FORTIS Championships.
The fifth-seeded Schiavone had been the favourite going into the match, particularly having ousted Patty Schnyder 6-1 6-1 in the quarter-finals, but her 22-year-old Ukrainian opponent outclassed her from start to finish.
Five breaks of serve proved the difference between the players as Bondarenko claimed her maiden title and Schiavone lost in a singles final for the eighth successive time.
The unseeded Bondarenko, 62nd in the world rankings, said: "I'm very happy. If I keep playing like I did here, it'll help open doors for me. I'm playing well."
Schiavone, who teamed up with Kveta Peschke to win the doubles final against Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Liezel Huber, said: "She played great. She didn't give me a chance and only gave away three or four points in the match. I was trying to find the solution but didn't do so well I guess."
