Anne Chakvetadze's continued success against Anabel Medina Garrigues has led to a memorable first.
The third-seeded Chakvetadze captured her first career title with a 6-3 6-4 victory over Medina Garrigues in Sunday's final of the $175,000 Guangzhou International.
It was the fourth victory in as many career meetings against Medina Garrigues for the 19-year-old Chakvetadze, all in straight sets.
A native of Russia, Chakvetadze has yet to be pushed beyond 6-4 in any set against the Spaniard.
"I knew I had to be really aggressive today, and it worked," Chakvetadze said. "Maybe the score looked easy, but it was a very difficult match. I just took my chances. Fortunately I came out on top today."
Not even a late rain delay in this Tier III event could slow down Chakvetadze, who improved to 32-19 this season.
"When the rain started, I wanted to keep playing but she wanted to stop," she said.
"I just felt like I didn't want to lose the momentum.
In the end, the rain stopped after only a few minutes, so fortunately we were able to continue and I managed to win in straight sets."
Chakvetadze, who collected $28,000, was playing in her first career final after benefiting from the retirement of top seed Jelena Jankovic in Saturday's semi-finals. The Russian was leading, 7-5 2-0, when Jankovic was forced to stop due to heat illness.
Medina Garrigues absorbed her first loss in three finals this season. She fell to 6-3 in title matches in her career.
