Kim Clijsters continued her amazing comeback with a 6-3 7-5 victory over
second seed Maria Sharapova in the final of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Miami.
The unseeded Belgian, who missed several months with a left wrist injury, won
her last tournament - the Pacific Life Open - two weeks ago and improved to 16-1
this year with the victory over the Russian.
Clijsters now has a 14-match winning streak and did not drop a set on her way
to becoming only the second player to win both Indian Wells and Miami in the
same season.
Steffi Graf accomplished the feat in 1994 and 1996.
The match featured numerous breaks of serve with Clijsters claiming the most
important at 5-5 in the second set.
There were three deuces in the game but Clijsters prevailed after Sharapova
hit a backhand into the net.
Clijsters raced out to a 40-15 lead in the next game but was unable to convert
her first two championship points.
She bailed herself out with two strong serves, one that Sharapova returned
into the net and the other she sailed long to give Clijsters the match.
