World number one and top seed Amelie Mauresmo was forced to retire injured in the final of the Porsche Grand Prix.
The French star withdrew with a recurring left-thigh strain after losing the first set 2-6 to American second seed Lindsay Davenport in Filderstadt.
World number two Davenport is now just 15 points behind Mauresmo in the rankings and could reclaim the top spot she last held in June 2001 after the Kremlin Cup in Moscow next week.
Davenport, winner of the event in 2001, said: "There's not a whole lot of joy winning a match like that. The first game was tough and then the injury started to bother her."
It was the 11th meeting between the two with the American now having won eight of those matches.
