Belgian Kim Clijsters will go to Melbourne full of confidence after collecting
her first title of the season in
the final of the adidas International in Sydney.
She defeated Lindsay Davenport on Saturday in the women's event running alongside
the men's tournament in Sydney.
The second seed was too strong for American sixth seed Davenport and prevailed
6-4 6-3.
It was Clijsters' 11th career WTA Tour title in her 18th final.
She was thrilled to win but admitted it would be necessary to re-focus ahead
of her opening match at Melbourne Park.
"It's always tough to focus back on that first match because you're probably
still on a roll from playing quarters, semis, then all of a sudden it starts all
over again," she said.
"You don't really get a lot of time to enjoy it, especially before such a big
tournament.
"But it's nice. I'm playing well.
"Maybe today I didn't play that well, but I think the weather conditions were
tough for both of us.
"I think with the wind it was tough for both of us."
Davenport backed Clijsters to be a serious contender at the Australian Open,
to which the Belgian replied: "It would be nice, of course. But I work hard for
every tournament I play.
"In a grand slam, you have to be there for two weeks and you have to do
everything for two weeks.
"All the players are so much more motivated, and especially players like
Venus and Serena [Williams].
"They get really fired up for those big events.
"Once it comes to the quarter-finals, semi-finals, they get really fired up
for those matches and they play even better."
