Venus Williams' awesome form shows no sign of
abating after the American breezed to her 20th straight win with a rapid 7-5
6-2 victory over Justine Henin in the final of the Australian Women's Hardcourt
Championships.
The top-seeded Williams needed just 70 minutes to see off the defending
champion and claim her fourth successive WTA title.
"It's been a good week. At the start of the week my goal was to get some good
practice in and some good matches, which I did," said Williams after claiming
her 22nd career title.
"I feel my game is at a good level right now."
The match marked the third time the second-seeded Henin has lost to Williams in
a final following defeats at Wimbledon and New Haven.
"(Venus) was just too good today," said the Belgian.
"She was playing very well from the baseline and she had me rushing on a number
of points. But I'm pretty happy with my play today and this week. It's a good
preparation for the Australian Open, just like I had last year."
Henin saved four set points to force a 5-5 tie in the opening set before
Williams held serve.
But with a tie-break beckoning Henin had a foot fault,
netted a forehand and sent a backhand too long to give Williams the set.
The Wimbledon runner-up then failed to cash in on three break opportunities in
the third game of the second set before being broken twice to give Williams a
5-1 lead.
The 21-year-old broke back to make it 5-2, but the match ended on a
disappointing note as Henin double-faulted on match point to give the American
the title.
