Sandrine Testud of France claimed her first WTA title for three years,
defeating an ailing Justine Henin at the inaugural Big Island Championships in
Hawaii.
Trailing 3-6 0-2, the top-seeded Henin retired due to a thigh injury, leaving
her without a title since late June. The 19-year-old Belgian had won her first
three WTA crowns this season.
Testud, 29, claimed her third career title and first since October 1998, when
she beat Lindsay Davenport to claim the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Germany.
The second seed also avenged January's straight-sets loss to Henin in the
final of the Canberra International in Australia, where she won only four
games.
Testud, ranked 17th in the world, cruised through the first set and Henin was
forced to take a medical time-out.
She had her thigh strapped and began the second set but after only two games
called for more attention and then decided to pull out.
