Kim Clijsters won her first LTA Tour tournamen of the year, upsetting
second-seeded Lindsay Davenport in the final of the Bank of the West Classic in
Stanford, California.
The third-seeded Belgian won in three sets - 6-4 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 - and served
notice that she cannot be overlooked for the US Open next month.
Clijsters avenged a quarter-final loss at Wimbledon and won for the first time
in four finals this year.
"I hadn't won one yet, so it's really nice," said Clijsters. "After the
second set, I was like, 'Oh, I don't want to lose another'. So I kept
focusing."
"She is a better player than she was three weeks ago when I played her at
Wimbledon," admitted Davenport, who was denied her fourth title of the year.
"She didn't play well at Wimbledon. She played well today."
