Rain could not stop Lindsay Davenport from winning the State Farm Tennis Classic in Arizona like it did last year.
Davenport cruised to her second title of the year as she defeated local favourite Meghann Shaughnessy 6-2 6-3 in the all-American final of the hard-court tournament.
In 2000, rain forced the cancellation of her final with Martina Hingis.
"It was a bizarre way to end here last year," said Davenport. "I had big wins but was not able to play the final.
"I'm very happy to have played the final and won this year."
Davenport fired 10 aces and produced 30 winners, but was also helped when Shaughnessy suffered a strained right groin in the fifth game of the second set.
The 24-year-old Davenport improved her season record to 15-2 as she claimed her 32nd career title.
"I felt very confident today," Davenport said. "Meghann had a lot of pressure on herself to try and win some games."
On Saturday, Davenport avenged one of her two losses when she defeated Australian Open champion Jennifer Capriati in a three-set semi-final.
Shaughnessy, a resident of Scottsdale, could not follow up her stunning upset of second seed Monica Seles in the semi-finals.
In addition to being hampered by her injury, she never forced a break point on Davenport's serve.
"It was a very positive week for me," Shaughnessy said. "I played some great tennis. I'm just disappointed to finish like this."
