Russian world number five Vera Zvonareva won the Pattaya Open on Sunday seeing off the spirited challenge of India's Sania Mirza in straight sets.
Mirza started strongly in sweltering conditions against the top seed but after Zvonareva edged the first set in just under an hour, the Russian eased through the second against a fading fifth seed and recorded a 7-5 6-1 victory.
In-form Zvonareva, 24, did not drop a set all week and continued the form which saw the Russian reach the semi-finals at the Australian Open with a deserved eighth career title.
"Sania played well all week," said Zvonareva. "She played great tennis, and I'm sure we will have many more tough matches."
Zvonareva broke the Mirza serve for a 4-2 lead before consolidating the breakthrough with a hold with three straight aces to win game seven.
Mirza held to hand Zvonareva the chance to serve for the set but after the Indian caught a fortunate net cord at 30-30 and then sent a forehand just into the tramlines at break point, converted her second chance of the game following an inch-perfect cross court forehand winner.
Mirza had two chances to force a deserved tie-break but first double-faulted and then missed a crosscourt forehand to allow Zvonareva to win the set in 52 minutes despite being on the back foot for long periods as the Indian netted.
Zvonareva fought off a break point to hold her first service game in the second set and broke to forge ahead 3-1 after Mirza was unable to deal with a deep forehand.
The lead soon became 4-1 with a straightforward hold and with Mirza appearing to tire her coach and father Imran made his second brief appearance of the match on court.
The move did not stop Zvonareva's charge and another break soon followed and after 78 minutes Mirza fired a forehand long on the Russian's first match point.
"Vera played very well, I did what I could, but she played better today," said Mirza.
The win helped Zvonareva level the her career record against Mirza at 1-1 after losing to the Indian at the 2005 Japan Open.
