It took a while, but Vania King came through for her first WTA Tour title Sunday.
The 17-year-old from California overcame her first dropped set of the tournament to post a 2-6 6-4 6-4 victory over Tamarine Tanasugarn in the final of the PTT Bangkok Open.
Appearing in her first WTA Tour final, King needed two hours and 24 minutes to outlast local favourite Tanasugarn, who had not dropped a set prior to the final. She was trying to win her first title since 2003.
"I tried my best in the match and I'm sorry I didn't win," Tanasugarn said. "I got to the final and it was a great week for me, and I'm so grateful for all the warm support from my family, friends and the crowds."
King's best previous result was a semi-final appearance earlier this season in Bangalore, India.
She topped that on Sunday by overcoming a 2-4 deficit in the third set.
"It's my first WTA Tour title and I'm ecstatic to have won," King said. "Words can't describe how I'm feeling right now. I think my game has improved so much in the last three weeks and I'm getting more aggressive, it's fantastic.
"I started slow today. I think I was a little tired from last night's match, and she was playing great and coming up with the shots. In the first set I was trying to come in but she was hitting these low sharp angles and I felt I couldn't hurt her. I was standing too far back."
King, who turned pro only three months ago, got her first break of Tanasugarn to take a 4-2 lead in the second set.
She also won the doubles event here with Jelena Kostanic as they posted a 7-5 2-6 7-5 victory over Mariana Diaz-Oliva and Natalie Grandin.
