Nadia Petrova of Russia claimed her second career WTA Tour title with a 6-3 7-5 upset of the top seed Amelie Mauresmo on Saturday at the Qatar Total Open.
Petrova, who improved to just 2-4 all-time against Mauresmo, had been the best female player never to have won a tournament until taking the title at Linz, Austria last October.
The Frenchwoman, who captured her first grand slam crown at the Australian Open this season, could have leapfrogged Kim Clijsters into the world number one spot but defeat as kept her second in the rankings.
Petrova converted four of 11 break points, including one of two in the second set.
Mauresmo managed to take two of the three break chances in the first set but failed on all four opportunties to break Petrova in the second.
