Kim Clijsters cannot complain about her form
heading into the year-end WTA Tour Championships.
The top seed from Belgium, Clijsters claimed her tour-leading ninth title of
the year on Sunday with a 6-2 6-3 triumph over Italian Francesca Schiavone at
the Gaz de France Stars tennis tournament.
The reigning US Open champion, Clijsters rolled through five rounds of the Tier III indoor event without losing any more than three games in any
set.
Overall, she lost just 17 of 77 total games.
"I played very well, played within myself because she forces you to go for a
lot of different shots," Clijsters said.
"I'm very happy with my week overall - played some solid matches and put
myself in a good position to go to LA."
Clijsters, who has won five of her last six tournaments, leads the tour with
66 victories. She became the first woman to win nine titles in a year since she
accomplished the feat two years ago.
The third seed from Italy, Schiavone came up short in her third final in her
last six events.
Two weeks ago, Schiavone reached the final at Moscow before falling to Mary
Pierce, then advanced to the quarter-finals at Zurich last week before being
defeated by eventual champions Lindsay Davenport.
Overall, Schiavone is 0-4 in career finals.
"Physically I wasn't the best today," Schiavone said. "It's been a great
week for me, but yesterday's match took a lot out of me, and it can't be like
this when you play Kim. She's up there with Lindsay (Davenport) this year as
the best player, and it will be interesting to see what will happen in LA.
"I am taking a vacation now and hopefully my good play over these last weeks
will translate into more success next year."
