Top-seed Lindsay Davenport needed only two sets
to beat Amelie Mauresmo in the final of the WTA Porsche Tennis Grand Prix event
in Filderstadt, Germany.
In what was a rematch of last year's final, Davenport was always in control,
winning the first set 6-2 and the second 6-4, as her serve proved too strong for
the Frenchwoman.
The victory gave Davenport her fifth title of 2005 and also put her in
exclusive company as she becomes just the ninth woman to win 50 WTA Tour singles
titles.
"I'm really excited to win 50 titles. That means a lot to me as not many
players have won that many," Davenport said.
"I was thinking about it after I
won Bali and was glad to be able to do it here right off the bat."
Last year, Davenport won the opening set of the final 6-2 before Mauresmo
retired with a left abductor strain.
This time she also raced out to a fast start taking the first set by an
identical score and denying Mauresmo her third title of the season.
"Whenever you're playing a final it's important to get off to a good start
and I did that today," Davenport said.
"This has been a really great week for me; I've been able to play at a high
level and keep it up, very much the same as last year here. I was really fired
up to play well and I'm glad I did that.
"I was in control for most of the match, dictating most of the rallies and
playing very well, winning those four games in a row in the middle of the first
set and again to finish the match."
Davenport improves to 11-3 against Mauresmo, having won their past eight
encounters.
Mauresmo, who led 4-2 in the second set, hasn't beaten Davenport since January
2000.
"It was very tough today with the way she was serving," Mauresmo said.
"The only chance I had was in the sixth game of the second set and she played
perfect again after that. I was disappointed with how I served, especially in
the first set, and she's too good at returning when she gets a lot of chances on
the second (serve).
"It's frustrating, although I had a good week and beat some good players, but
I really wanted to do better here. I'm disappointed I couldn't step it up when I
led 4-2 in the second."
