Justin Henin-Hardenne rallied for a 3-6 6-2 7-5
victory over second-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in the final of the J&S
Cup on Sunday.
Former world number one Henin-Hardenne did not drop a set before losing the
first to the 19-year-old Kuznetsova in this one.
The Belgian battled back from a break down in the third set to post her sixth
win in seven matches against Kuznetsova.
"It was a great battle at the end of the match," Henin-Hardenne said. "It's
been only for her in the first set and only for me in the second, and finally in
the third set we saw a good match, a good fight."
After missing the start of the season because of a knee injury, the
22-year-old Henin-Hardenne won her second consecutive clay court event.
She has won 12 straight matches and is 14-1 since returning to action in Miami
in early April.
"It's good that I've got a lot of matches, that was the main goal,"
Henin-Hardenne said. "Now I have a couple of matches on clay, and that gives me
a lot of confidence before the French Open. And I hope next week in Berlin I
will still have other matches."
After ending the 17-match winning streak of Belgium's Kim Clijsters on
Saturday, Kuznetsova was vying for her first WTA title of the season and sixth
overall.
"I'd like to know how it happened, that I lost it," Kuznetsova said. "The
match could have gone so many ways.
"The first set was the best I ever played in this tournament, just
unbelievable. I was running down all the balls and serving well.
"But at the end of the set I pulled my leg and I wasn't moving so well in the
second set. At 4-1, I had it taped, and she also served much better in the
second set.
"I couldn't stay with her on the same level."
