Top-seeded American Lindsay Davenport made a
successful defence of her title at the Bausch & Lomb Championships on Sunday.
Davenport won her second title of the year with a 7-5 7-5 triumph over 12th
seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy in the final of the claycourt event.
The world's top-ranked player, Davenport had won just once in her four
previous final matches this year, claiming the title at Dubai last month.
It was the 47th career title for Davenport, who won the final three games of
the match, including two on the Italian's serve.
Farina Elia was in search of her fourth career WTA Tour singles title.
Davenport has won seven of her eight career meetings with Farina Elia,
including a 6-2 6-0 rout on clay last year.
