Slovakian Martina Sucha ended American
qualifier Abigail Spears' improbable run with a three-set victory in the
Bell Challenge final on Sunday.
Sucha, who will turn 24 later this month, recorded her second career title and
first since Hobart in 2002 with a 7-5 3-6 6-2 triumph in this Tier III
event.
Playing in her first final since Budapest in early May, Sucha claimed US$27,000
for winning first prize in the penultimate WTA Tour event of the year.
"It's been a long time since my first title," Sucha said.
"This tournament is bigger than Hobart, but I can't compare the two because
both of them are very special."
In a tournament plagued by upsets, Sucha had defeated qualifier Sesil
Kararantcheva of Bulgaria to advance to the semi-finals, where she ousted
Maria-Emilia Salerni of Argentina on Saturday.
"It was really tough," Sucha said.
"We both were really tired from the tough matches that we had this week. This
one had a lot of rallies, but (Spears) had more matches, so she may have been
more tired."
Spears, who was in search of her first career WTA title, had left the likes of
fourth seed Jill Craybas in her wake en route to her first final.
"This was a great week for me," said Spears, who was attempting to become
the fourth qualifier to win a WTA singles title.
"I'm happy with how I played all week. This is the best tournament for me,
and I can definitely take a lot of confidence from this week into the rest of
the year."
Despite falling in the finals, Spears is expected to crack the top 100 for the
first time in her career when official rankings are released on Monday.
