Amelie Mauresmo will return to the top spot in the
world rankings after breezing to her fourth title of the year Sunday.
Mauresmo, who lost her No. 1 ranking earlier this month due to a left adductor
strain, posted a convincing win over No. 9 Elena Bovina of Russia in the final
of the 585,000 Generali Ladies Linz tennis tournament.
"I'm very happy with how I played this week," Mauresmo said.
"I showed that I can play well at a high level with a lot of confidence after
an injury break like that."
Gearing up for the season-ending WTA Championships on November 8, the
top-seeded Frenchwoman recorded a 6-2 6-0 victory in just more than an hour to
finish the event with just one of nine sets lost.
"I mixed it up at the right times and made it difficult for Elena to play her
game," Mauresmo said.
"Also, she was more tired than me after (Saturday's) semi-final match and I
think that took a lot out of her."
Mauresmo, who captured her first title since Montreal back in August, improved
to 3-0 lifetime against the 21-year-old Russian, raising her yearly earnings to
more than 1.44 million.
Bovina, who edged fellow countrywoman No. 5 Nadia Petrova, 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-3)
in the semi-finals Saturday, dropped to 1-2 in finals this year.
"I was tired a bit from (Saturday's) match against Nadia," Bovina said.
"It was very intense and was tough to come back and play at such a high level
again."
