Qualifier Na Li became the first woman from
China to win a WTA event when she defeated Slovakia's Martina Sucha 6-3 6-4 in
the final of the Guangzhou International Women's Open.
Although six Chinese women have reached the finals of six WTA tournaments,
none were able to win until Li did it Sunday.
Li won three ITF Women's Circuit events in 2004 and held two match points on
eventual US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the second round before falling
in a third-set tie-break on September 22.
Li also became the third qualifier to win a WTA tour event in 2004.
