Seventh-seeded Russian Elena Bovina won her
first title in two years, beating Nathalie Dechy of France, 6-2 2-6 7-5, in the
final of the Pilot Pen tournament.
The players staged an entertaining match, with Bovina breaking
eighth-seeded Dechy in the 12th game of the third set to close out the match and
earn the first prize.
It was the third WTA Tour title - her first at Tier II - for Bovina, who last won in
Quebec City in 2002.
"It's been an amazing week for me," Bovina said.
"I never thought one time that I could win the tournament. It's not that I
didn't believe in myself, it's just I was playing every day, day after day,
match after match, that I never even thought of myself getting to the finals."
Bovina improved to 2-1 all time against Dechy, with all three encounters
taking place on hardcourts.
Dechy, who like Bovina was in her fourth singles final, failed to claim her
second title. She won Gold Coast in 2003.
"Losing in the final for sure is disappointing, but I had such a great week.
I'm coming from the Olympics. I didn't know really what to expect because I just
arrived on Saturday evening. The whole week has been really great. So I just
have to think about this and then move on to the US Open next week."
Bovina is seeded 26th at the upcoming US Open, while Dechy is ranked 28th for
the Grand Slam event.
