Another week, another final, another crown for
red-hot Lindsay Davenport.
Fourth-seeded Davenport won her third title in as many weeks with a 6-1 6-1
47-minute demolition of French Open champion Anastasia Myskina on Sunday to win
the Acura Classic.
Davenport stretched her winning streak to 14 matches as she captured all three
legs of the California hardcourt season despite suffering a jammed right knee in
her semi-final victory over another Russian, fifth seed Elena Dementieva, on
Saturday.
The former world number one beat Venus Williams and younger sister Serena at
the Bank of the West Classic and the JP Morgan Chase Open on consecutive Sundays
before hoisting her 43rd career trophy under sunny and breezy skies at the La
Costa Hotel and Spa.
"It's just been a phenomenal summer so far," said Davenport, who will jump
two spots to the number two ranking on Monday after improving to 47-6, including
five titles, in 2004.
"I'm just so grateful I've been able to play and stay healthy. I've just
really enjoyed it and hope I can keep it going for another few weeks in the
through the Open."
Davenport's sweep through California is the second in her career and hopes
lightning will strike again.
After turning the trifecta in 1998, the nearby Laguna Beach native went on to
win the first of three Grand Slam crowns, the US Open.
Myskina returned to center court after a dramatic 6-2 6-7 (4/7) 7-6 (17/15)
semi-final victory over fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva on Saturday night.
However, the third seed could not find her legs nor the firepower to challenge
the hottest player on the tour.
"I'm sorry I couldn't fight but I was very tired from last night," said
Myskina. "I'm really exhausted, I just couldn't find a way to fight."
