Jelena Jankovic of Serbia & Montenegro won her first
career WTA Tour singles title on Sunday at the Budapest Grand Prix by defeating
Slovakia's Martina Sucha in the final.
The 19-year-old Jankovic captured the title in her first career final, winning
in straight sets against Sucha, 7-6 (7/4) 6-3.
The number eight seeded player dropped just one set during the week in
Budapest and picked up 16,000 as winner of the event.
Jankovic defeated lucky loser Dominika Nociarova in the first round, survived
a three-set challenge from Roberta Vinci in the second round but then thrashed
Ludmila Cervanova.
She reached her first final with a 6-3 6-4 victory against Flavia Pennetta in
the semi-finals.
Jankovic, who resides in Bradenton, Florida, improved to 15-9 on the year and
clearly had her best performance of the year in Budapest.
Her previous best result in 2004 came in Miami, where she lost to Tatiana
Golovin in the third round.
