Lisa Raymond recovered from her opening-day loss to
help the United States into the second round of the Fed Cup.
Raymond won the clinching match against host Slovenia with a 5-7 6-3 6-4
victory over Katerina Srebotnik on Sunday as the Americans advanced with a 4-1
victory.
Coming off Saturday's 7-5 7-5 loss to Tina Pisnik, Raymond got off to another
slow start on Sunday, dropping the first set.
"Everyone said this is a new day, and it's funny because it is," said
Raymond.
"As down as I was last night, and as devastated as I was at losing and
feeling as though I'd let everyone down, I'm on such a high right now."
The United States advanced to face Austria in the quarter-finals in July.
Austria beat Slovakia 3-2.
"It was amazing," added Raymond, who said she would be available in July.
"This was my first Fed Cup tie without Serena (Williams) playing, and I would
love to keep playing."
After splitting the first two matches on Saturday, the United States won all
three Sunday, starting with Venus Williams' 6-3 6-1 victory over Pisnik.
On a high after her win over Raymond, Pisnik stunned Williams by winning 10 of
the first 11 points and twice broke her serve in taking a 3-2 lead in the first
set.
But Williams responded by winning 10 of the last 11 games of the match.
The doubles tandem of Raymond and Martina Navratilova defeated Srebotnik and
Tina Krizan 6-1 1-6 6-0 to complete the 4-1 victory.
Joining the United States in the second round will be defending champions
France, who completed a 5-0 victory over Germany.
In other notable results, Russia defeated Australia 4-1, while Spain and
Belgium advanced with 3-2 wins over Switzerland and Croatia respectively.
