Amelie Mauresmo was unable to build on
her surprise win over Justine Henin-Hardenne as she ran into a determined and
sometimes dazzling Lindsay Davenport in the Bausch & Lomb Championships final.
American Davenport posted a 6-4 6-4 victory on Sunday at the Amelia Island
event, proving too strong for her French opponent who on Saturday had upset
world number one Henin-Hardenne.
In doing so, Davenport became only the 10th player in the Open Era to win 40
or more titles on the women's tour.
This was the second time that the evergreen American has won at Amelia Island,
after a 1997 victory.
Last year she was beaten in the final by Elena Dementieva, but it was a more
impressive Davenport this time.
As fourth seed to Mauresmo's third seed, the difference between the players
was always likely to be narrow.
So it proved, as the scoreline reflects, with Davenport hanging to a
threadbare lead to stay ahead and clinch her second title of the year.
