Kim Clijsters has been number one in the
world and has quite a collection of WTA Tour titles, but achieved one of her
sweetest successes on Sunday with her first tournament victory on home soil.
Clijsters, the second seed, routed eighth seed Silvia Farina Elia of Italy 6-3
6-0 in the final of the Proximus Diamond Games for her 21st career title.
"It's extremely special for me to win my first title in Belgium," Clijsters
said.
"I still remember five years ago when I made my WTA Tour debut five years ago
in a smaller tournament here in Antwerp.
"It was a great feeling holding the diamond racket. It's very heavy but I
think it's the most beautiful trophy you can win. The crowd was amazing and it's
very special to hear 15,000 people cheering you on."
Clijsters has captured her last two tournaments, arriving here fresh off her
victory in Paris and joining fellow Belgian and world number one Justine
Henin-Hardenne as the only players on tour to win consecutive crowns.
Last week in Paris, Farina Elia was one game away from a quarter-final victory
before Clijsters rallied for a 3-6 7-5 6-3 win.
This contest last just 69 minutes. It was tied at 3-3 in the first set, before
Clijsters ran away with it to post her sixth in as many meetings with Farina
Elia.
The first eight games of the match lasted 42 minutes, while the remaining
seven games only took 27 minutes.
The 20-year-old Clijsters, runner-up to Venus Williams here last year, did not
drop a set in four matches this week.
Farina Elia, who has now surpassed three million US dollars in career
earnings, had a point to make it 4-4 in the first set, but couldn't convert.
"Today was very difficult," Farina Elia said. "I felt very tired mentally
and physically after the game for 4-all.
"It's very tough to win points against Kim in general as she makes very
little mistakes and is very strong with her strokes. I'm very happy with
reaching my first Tier II final and it's a day to remember even though I
lost."
Els Callens made the Belgian triumph complete after she paired with Cara Black
of Zimbabwe to win the doubles title with a 6-2 6-1 victory over the duo of
Myriam Casanova of Switzerland and Greece's Eleni Daniilidou.
With Belgians performing well, the event drew 118,300 this week - making it
the largest attendance for an indoor event ever on the WTA Tour.
