Australian Nicole Pratt claimed the first
WTA Tour title of her 15-year career on Saturday by beating Russian teenager
Maria Kirilenko in straight sets at the Indian Open.
Kirilenko was just two years old when Pratt made her professional debut at the
age of 15, and her challenge faded in the final of this tournament as the more
experienced Australian triumphed 7-6 (7/3) 6-1.
Florida-based Pratt, seeded fourth this week, upped her game in the second set
and fought off the unseeded Kirilenko who had reached the final courtesy of a
shock victory over second seed Marion Bartoli.
Pratt's triumph marks a new career-high for the 30-year-old who had only ever
contested one previous final, at Shanghai in 2001, and whose world ranking has
hovered around 50 for the past five years.
