Lindsay Davenport turned in another dominant
performance to defeat unseeded Magdalena Maleeva in straight sets in the final
of the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo.
Davenport, ranked sixth in the world, missed a good portion of 2003 with
injuries.
But she has made a successful return, improving to 10-1 this season as she
beat Maleeva 6-4 6-1 to claim her fourth Pan Pacific title and the 189,000 US
dollars first prize.
The second seed won her 12th straight match here and 39th career title, taking
advantage of an injury to top-seeded Venus Williams.
Davenport lost more than two games in one set for the first time in the
tournament but still finished off the Bulgarian in only 57 minutes.
The 27-year-old said: "It's an honour to win a tournament four times,
especially one as prestigious as this."
Davenport, who also won here in 1998 and 2001, defeated Maria Vento Kabchi of
Venezuela and eighth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia before rolling past
seventh-seeded Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia 6-0 6-1 in the semi-final.
