Top seed Elena Dementieva of Russia
claimed her third career singles title with a straight-sets victory over
American Chanda Rubin in the final of the Polo Open in Shanghai.
Eight days after beating Rubin in the Wismilak International final in Bali,
the talented Russian repeated the feat with a comfortable victory to claim the
trophy.
Dementieva took the first set 6-3, and held her nerve in a second set
tie-break to wrap the win, 7-6 (8-6).
Both Dementieva and Rubin were appearing in consecutive WTA tour singles finals for the first time in their careers, and like in Bali last week, it was the
Russian who reigned supreme.
A delighted Dementieva said: "It feels unbelievable to win my second title in
a row.
"I came here hoping to keep my good play from last week, but to come all the
way through and win the title again is great.
"I think we both played more aggressively (than in Bali last week). Chanda's
forehand was working very well today, so I was trying to play more to her
backhand."
Rubin was understandably disappointed to be losing her second final in a week
to the same opponent, and blamed a lack of concentration at crucial points.
She said: "I felt I played a lot better than I did last week against Elena. I
was trying different tactics, to be more aggressive, especially on the returns.
"It was only at the crucial moments at the end of the second set that I
seemed to lose concentration, if only for a moment.
"Unfortunately at this level of tennis that can be enough to lose a match. Of
course, I'm happy with the past two weeks, reaching the finals at both
tournaments.
"On the other hand, I would have liked to have played better in both finals,
to have kept up the pressure at all times."
