Double-barrelled and explosive, Justine
Henin-Hardenne is gunning for more grand slam glory over the next three weeks
and all the signs point to her being ready to blast away the best women in the
world.
With all the clinical efficiency of a hitman, the Belgian blew away Russian
Lina Krasnoroutskaya to win her sixth title of the season at the Rogers AT&T Cup
on Sunday.
And with the US Open beginning on Monday week, there is apparently no better
player on the WTA Tour right now - and that includes Kim Clijsters.
New world number one Clijsters was knocked out in the third round of this
event by Krasnoroutskaya, marking the first time this season she has exited a
tournament before the semi-finals.
But Henin-Hardenne made a mockery of her opponent's billing as a serious
threat in the title match.
The 21-year-old won 6-1 6-0 in her seventh final of ths season and matched
Clijsters' record of six tournament wins in 2003.
It was her 12th career title and earned her almost £120,000, but more
importantly it demonstrated the form which Henin-Hardenne is running into ahead
of Flushing Meadows.
Of course, in June she crushed Clijsters for the loss of only four games to
win the French Open title. So, unlike her fellow Belgian, Henin-Hardenne has the
experience of winning a grand slam behind her, which should stand her in good
stead.
Also this season, Henin-Hardenne has captured titles and big pay-cheques at
Dubai, Charleston, Berlin and San Diego.
She has now won two tournaments during the summer hardcourt season heading
into the US Open, and has not lost since falling in the semi-finals of Wimbledon
to Serena Williams in the first week of July.
Krasnoroutskaya, the number 38 player in the world, looked helpless in her
first career final.
She lost for the second time in as many meetings with Henin-Hardenne, winning
just four games in four sets.
The 19-year-old failed to become the third unseeded champion at this event,
but her performance this week will lift her ranking to about number 23 when the
new list is released on Monday.
