Home favourite and reigning champion Fabiola
Zuluaga won the Copa Colsanitas claycourt event for the fourth time on Sunday
after defeating Spain's Anabel Medina in straight sets.
Fourth-seeded Zuluaga claimed a 6-3 6-2 win to lift the trophy she won here in
1996, 1999 and again last year.
It took her only 53 minutes to defeat the 20-year-old Medina, who has only
recently returned to the circuit after a year-long absence following a knee
injury.
Clearly moved, Zuluaga dedicated her victory to the war-torn Colombian
people.
"It was a dream for me to be in this final again, and win the title," the
24-year-old said.
"I'm really happy, and I want to dedicate this title to all those who are
kidnapped, to all those who believe in Colombia and love it, and those who want
to stay here.
"This is a country that cries, but never gives up.
"Every time I play I think of my country, and I believed that this year it
could be a special victory, for all the violent things that are happening in
Colombia. We thought that some players wouldn't want to come here, but they all
did it, and I really appreciate their support."
Medina echoed Zuluaga's sentiments.
"I'm really surprised about this tournament. So many people in the stands, so
many media following it. Really I think this is an example for the women
circuit," she said.
